Why not Computer Stores?

I notice more and more, people looking for high end computers almost always purchase online. Is this because of price, ease, desire for personal customization?

I'm not sure if this is considered spam or not, but I doing some research and I was wondering exactly what consumers who buy high end computers look for in a retailer.

The main reason is mostly for performance and quality, pre-build-ed computers tend to have cheap components.

You could easily save 100 or 200$ on a computer that you buy the parts by separate than buying it pre-build, the bad part is that the warranty in each part would be probably different in years/months.

You can get the same custom built machine in a store that you can online, the only difference is that in a store you'll be paying and extra $200+ to have someone put it together for you.

stores have their pluses. It is so much easier to return defective and unwanted/uneeded items to a store than it is when you buy online. I had a defective stick of ram once I got off newegg.com. It got exchanged but the process to do so wasn't very easy IMO.

Most of the stores here in VA jack thier prices on parts way up and don't have the selection online has. If the prices were a little closer I would shop at local businessess just to support them but the price gaps are way to large.

Places like Fry's (I have one near me, lucky me :P ) have reasonable prices, but on certain items (like graphics cards) their prices are really high. However, on Zalman products, their prices are amazing. Maybe they have some sort of deal. I usually go there for small items like fans.

So it's mostly price and ease right? But if there were places that did have decent prices and a nice selection you might be more apt to actually go into a physical store?

Sure, and I do. I bought a fair amount of my current setup by actually going to a store.

I think the internet is used a lot because you don't actually have to leave your seat to buy what you want. You find > You review > You Buy.

It's that easy, it saves a trip to the store, but I think if store prices were as cheap I'd shop at a store because it's easier to take it back if it doesn't work :P

EDIT: I've never asked but, who is it in your avatar Koff?

I built a computer for a friend about 1.5 years ago. We ordered every piece by itself online and he saved like 400 dollars from using pricewatch.com, newegg.com etc.

Well, the video card was DOA and it took him about 2 to 3 weeks to exchange it from where he bought it online. The video card he bought was only about 20 dollars (maybe 30) cheaper than the computer store down the street. If he had bought it at the computer store he could have exchanged it for a working one that day. that is the down side to buying online. I have never really had a pleasant experience returning stuff online compared to a store.

In all honesty, unless I am saving tons of money, I will usually just buy from a store. I may be paying like a few dollars more per a product but never really that much more, but at the same time I know that I can exchange it if it goes defective in the first 30 days via their return policy. Online return policies are even more strict than retail chain stores. On things like video cards, I can see why you would want to buy that online. You can easily save 100 dollars sometimes off the bat just by buying online. However, I never build a whole system online anymore because of the crap I have had to go through to return defective hardware.

Yeah, it is a pain when you have to package everything back up and post it and then wait for it to arrive again, it is a lot easier to walk to the local store.

For sure. If it's within $10-15 on an item or even $10 more than the item with shipping vs online I would buy it in a store. Closer the price the better though :P

I hate buying stuff online ... generally [notably] higher prices than I can get it for and on top of that, gotta wait. The online time i buy online is when i cant get it locally

Course I go through more hardware and get it cheaper than most people so thats also a consideration.
