Why two LAN cards?

I'm buying an ASUS A8N-SLI, however, one of the differences between that and the Deluxe is 2 LAN connections. Why would you want 2? What have I been missing all these years w/ only 1? And if I decided down the road that I wanted 2, if I installed a PCI network card, would thier be any performance difference/conflict between the onboard and PCI?

Thanks!

It could also be a computer that was made for networking, I know computers that are clogged with ethernet cables *looks at his own*. I doubt there would be any preformance issues, I myself have a integrated, and a PCI network card.
