Why won't my laptop find my router?

Hi all

I've just bought my wife a cheap and cheerful laptop which claims to have wireless LAN capabilities. I have a Sky router which already has connected to it a desktop (hardwired) and a PS3 (wireless). If I plug the laptop directly in to the router it will find the internet & e-mail without a problem, however it won't find it wirelessly.

Using Vista, I'm going to Microsoft > Network and clicking on the add a wireless device button. It reprts back that no devices have been found.

Am I missing something ... ?

Thanks for reading.

If your 100% sure the computer has a built in device, then I would call the manufacturer for troubleshooting steps. On my girlfriends laptop all I had to do is turn it on and it found the internet. You can also try just getting an external adapter for the laptop and see if that solves your problem.

After I posted here, using the Windows HelpCenter Windows actually managed to find the wireless hardware - so it's definitely there.

I guess I'll have to phone the manufacturer's helpline when they open again on Monday morning.

Thanks for your thoughts.

is the wireless signal enabled in your router settings?

is there a green light under the wireless logo on your router?

Hi funkysnair

Thanks for your comments.

I have checked the router settings and the wireless signal is enabled. There isn't a wireless logo on Sky's router - it's just a black box with a series of little green lights, but the PS3 finds the router wirelessly every time it's switched on.
