Why wont Sony fix my PS2 for free?

I have a disc read error, and i followed the steps of what i found on this article where they said that sony can wave the cost of fixing the ps2, but when i called them they try to charge me 45$ to fix my ps2. I thougth sony got sued for putting out faulty ps2's. THe guy told me they use to wave it but not anymore, why is that?
 
Yeh, it would probably have to be a crazy slimline one though, that they use in media center pc's, which will prob mean that youll need some kind of adapter to change the no. of pins on the cable/connector
 
It might not be under warrenty, there is a way you can fix it, my firend fixed his he said he got a kit off ebay for like 5$ or somehting like that.
 
I had the same problem with mine I bought and new laser eye off of ebay for it. Its not that hard to install.
