Why?

I keep hearing this big fuss about having the most up to date video card. Well i have a 6600 256mb and it runs everything from UT2k4 to Half LIfe 2 perfectly. Is there really any point in getting something like a 7800 other than to show off how much money you can spend? I mean i spent like 120 on this card and it runs like a dream.

Another question as well. What does ram in a vid card actually help? Is having 256 mroe important than 128? I hear it has something to do with resolutions above 1280 or whatever (which i never use anyways), but is there any other reason?

try out FEAR and Doom3, UT2k4 and HL arent shit on 6200s and up, hell, my lappys 9600 plays UT2k4 and HL at 1024x768 perfectly fine untill i play doom3 at 800x600 on lowest settings, slap doom3 into my desktop and watch them FPS reach 60 and hold it there om maxxed everything, res 1152x854, its a diffrence in better detailed games

I have all of those games and play them on normal and high, i run them all fine and never screw around with resolutions. Usually go with 1024x780. Don't see the point in anythign different, specially not if i have to pay 300+ more dollars for a small difference in looks. I personally enjoy playing the game not looking at it :/

Coudln't really understand what you were saying, and nto sure which question you were addressing. But i guess you were saying on higher resolutions the higher end cards have differences?

Higher resolutions tend to offer more "screen size" and detail. As for the memory question.....In a game like Doom3 or fear, graphics textures are loaded compressed into the gddr. The less you have, the less textures you can fit and the more compressed they have to be. See what im saying?

Once you get use to playing games with AAX4 or higher with 1280X1024 resoultion it hard to go back to anything less at least for me. A 6600 not going to get you those settings in quite a few games.

Yeah, you should be able to play all those fine. I've got a laptop with a 6600 on it and it can handle everything on the market now. Of course, the 7800 is top of the line for desktops at the moment, that's why it's so expensive. It can handle everything at max settings. But is it worth the $400 or whatever it costs now? That's totally up to the buyer. :)

My FX5200 can play HL2 and still get 40-50fps at 1024 on medium. I understand that HL2 isnt a gfx intensive game, more on the CPU though...??

I myself cant justify £100's on a graphics card, i spend about 1 hour a day gaming, nothing massive, so £700 on dual 7800GTX's is just a complete waste of space anfd in that case would be just to show how much money you've got.

If your happy with the 6600 then stick with it, i dont see any reason for upgrading.

Because

Some are missing the point though. People with 7800GT's or GTX's could say that those of us with less are just trying to make ourselves feel better for having less by justifying why we would not purchase one. Leave it alone :P... It is nice to have the best sometimes and lets face it If you easily have the cash and like to play games then why not? Might as well enjoy them with the best possible equipment right? jman15 could easily be asking you all "why would anyone need a 6800GT because my 6600 works great"... Basically that particular questions was silly. I could give you many reasons why anyone would want to use a 7800GT or GTX but I'm not going to here and now. Imaging all those people which $500. is pocket change :P. Why should they not purchase the better card and enjoy? "that is my question :P".

Well said.

my answer to your question, maybe there are better things you could be spending your money on? How many rich people out there do you see buying 10,000 dollar watches just because the can when a 20 dollar watch works and looks just as good. What is worse, is with vid cards, they will only be at the 500 dollar price range for no more than 6 months. Won't be long before they drop real low. Also, the vid cards are advancing faster than the games so the top of the line vid cards aren't even being fully utilized yet. So to answer my own question, i think the only reason to buy the "best" vid card on the market would probably be so that you don't have to update your computer for ages. Lot of good feedback, i think i got all my questions answered, and have a few perspectives to go on now. Thanks a bunch guys ^^

That is true among all hardware. Hardware will always advance before software does. There will be many screwy things to come with the advancement of dual core. :D

i got mine so that for once i have one of the best cards and can finally max a brand new game without playing with the settings, trying to figure out how to make it run smoothly

Try stock 7800GTX512mb playing FEAR on 1600X1200 4XAA and then tell me you dont need something of equal power to get over 30fps stable on those settings.

yea, i definitely would have to say that with a better graphics card at higher quality settings im more accurate. i mean u could run ut2k4 at 640x480... my accuracy was way better on higher qualitiess!

Many people like brand new games to look great and play great, this is why people get top-of-the-line graphics cards. Also when using LCD monitors, it pays to have a great graphics card if your LCDs native resolutionm is 1280x1024 and up since everything looks like shit when you don't run your monitor at its native resolution. I am currently playing my newly bought Half Life 2 at maxed out settings in 1280x1024 on my PC and it made a giant difference on the step up from my old 15" LCD(1024x768 res) to my new
17" LCD(1280x1024 res). Some people like to just play their games and dont care about image quality and some people like having a hi-def crystal clear image to play their games on. My preference is a mix of both, I hate playing games below 1024x768 but wont sacrifice gaming just because I cant have the quality I want but I will overclock and tweak everything to make sure I can run the game at my preferred quality settings.

I see your point I really do... I just don't share that opinion. For any reason you can give in your favor for not purchasing the card someone can give you an equally good reason for purchasing the card. As for the watch comment, You'd be amazed how many people buy expensive watches even when they cannot afford to do so. Why do people do this? because they like nice things. If you have the money then enjoy it... Don't Settle :P. I bought my 6800GT when It where at the top of the heap and it where dam expensive. Could you just imaging if I settled? I'd be looking for a new card today. Because I did not however settle I can get by and purchase the next best card when it is released and after the 7800GTX dust settles.

So my point to you is what? :)... That is right, don't settle... enjoy your money today.

Edit:

Here is what I thought was a good point until I read the native resolution bit :). On my LCD lower res looks incredible. Your point however is valid... Tech. you could say the native res looks best but I believe lower res looks awesome on my LCD. I however think this is a very valid and good point in the argument for why people want/need a powerful gpu. Good point again :D.

Your LCD may look good on lower-than-native resolutions but I've had 2 LCDs a new and an old one and both didn't look very good and were kinda blurry when not at their native res. Some LCDs are different than others I suppose. Good point tho.
