hey guys, im getting a am2 pc (as a lot of you know) and i was wondering (to save some money) could I use one of these and still get no lag on cod2, wow, guild wars, doom 3, etc.
[Socket-AM2] AMD Athlon™64 3500+ CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology
[Socket-AM2] AMD Athlon™64 3800+ CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology

or MUST I get one of these to play with no lag, I mean I dont have to have something thats the fastest, just something I can play new games with no lag

[Socket-AM2] AMD Athlon™64 X2 3800+ Dual-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology
[Socket-AM2] AMD Athlon™64 X2 4000+ Dual-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology

you guys posting would definately help, thanks:D

You may not notice any difference, or you may actually notice an increase if you get one of those single cores. Since not all games are multi-threaded (COD2 is however), but they dont take full advantage of dual-cores, so you're extra speed on the single core may compensate for a part of that disadvantage.

So to answer your question, getting the 3500+ or 3800+ would still be excellent for gaming, and will be better in some games.

Now if you want to play CoD2, i strongly recommend getting a better card then the 7300GS.

so the dual core would be a necessity??? or would games like wow, everquest, half life 2, guild wars, OBLIVION!! still play without lag??

No, it isn't a necessity. Like Geoff said, the only multi-threaded game is CoD2. If you are not playing that, then the 3800 single core will outperform the 3800 dual core.

Any of those 4 CPUs is going to play it without lag, as long as you have a proper video card. I don't know where the 7300GS came from, but I would recommend at least a 7600GT.

well, cod2 is the ONLY multi-threaded game?? and does any1 know if there are any more multi-threaded games announced to be realesed?? I guess I could always play cod2 on my 360..........

I don't know how you got that statement from my post. I was saying that you do not need an X2, and that the single cores will be fine, and will perform better in some games.

And no CoD2 isnt the only multi-threaded game, there are alot of them. But CoD2 retail is not multi-threaded, you need to download a patch that does it.

And virtually all new games will be multi-threaded.

In his other thread about buying a computer, he was talking about getting the X2 3800+ and the 7300GS.

HEY, Omega has been paying attention to my other posts :D that makes me feel good lol, but Im actually upgrading to a 7600gs 256 mb video card, so its all good.
