wierd internet!

I have a high speed cable internet connection and it works perfectly fine with my new dell dimension 3100; however, when I connect that internet to my other computer which is a bit on the old side, it doesn't work at all...
I have isolated the problem being somewhere in the computer and it is not a virus or anything like that because I just formated it. Does anyone have an idea for what I can do to get internet working on that computer?

What os? Do you get the Ip to change to the current pool?

That and what kind of connection to the system does it use?
