My harddrive is getting to be a few years old now and is starting to make wierd noises, is it possible that the wierd noise is a worning that the end is near for it?
Very possibly. If I were you I'd make an urgent backup of anything that you wish to save. Hard drives are one of the least robust parts of any system, just because it has moving parts.
