How do I get connected to the internet in a free wifi hotspot . I have a toshiba satellite laptop and I know that there is a Wizard that tells you what to do , but not sure of what to put in.
If it's free, you shouldn't have to put anything in... 99% of Access points broadcast the SSID and such so you just find them and connect. Hell usally Window's stupid little wifi thing connects for you.
Go to the Windows Wireless Configuration Utility, and where it shows available networks, click on the one from the hot-spot and it should automatically connect to it.
Thanks both of you. My son had it fixed so I could just click on the internet icon but for some reason , now I get the "Page not found" page. So now I am not sure how to fix it but I will just try it and see if the site shows up as a network.
Some protocals may need to be installed. Where ever this hot spot is, you can try to ask the provider if there is anything that needs to be done in order for you to access the internet.
...are you looking for a hot spot ? or are you in one now and have gotten disconnected ?
for a signal strength meter DL netstubler, when you click on the found mac address it shows a bar graph... also I think they have a listing of hot spots

Sorry it took me so long to get back. Had to take my new computer back in to Best Buy and I lent my laptop to my friend that was in the hospital all week so she could watch movies.
I was in a hotspot. My friends coffeeshop has free wifi and my son had it set so the laptop could get the internet there. But for some reason it now gives me "Page not found". My friend doest know how to configure my brand of laptop (Toshiba) so I can get the internet. My son is in another state. So thats why I was asking.
I went to my wifi access in Control Panel and it ask me how I want to set up to "My friends coffeeshop" . It ask me how do I want to connect to "the site" . USB Flash drive recommend . Then it tells me to plug it in.
There I am lost, I never had a usb flash drive to plug in before when it worked. Any suggestions ?
Do you have built in wireless on the laptop? If not, the USB drive its asking for will be a wireless dongle. I would reccomend buying a Mini-PCI card for wireless, those USB dongles are very tempremental (sp?)
do uou have any cards in the pcmcia slot ?
what model toshiba notebook do you have, post it and I will check , or go to toshibas web site and check to see if it has built in wireless http://www.toshiba.com/tai-new/
Sorry it took me so long to get back to the forum. I found out why it didnt work. My son , who gave it to me, told me why. There is a button at the side of the laptop that turns on the satellite function. I had hit to off when I put it in the backpack. Gee, I struggle sometimes So, Thanks alot, I am up and running again.
Wow, so basic. I'm sure someone at that coffee shop should've known if it was off or not. Laptops usually have a light telling you that it's on or not.
just for fun maybe, I'm 80% sure that "Google Earth" the acual downloadable program has a spots of where WiFi internet access is available, just for shiz and giggles, hehe
Thanks again everyone for your help. I am on my way back to the coffee shop to sit with my laptop, a decaf mocha and s strawberry/blueberry yogart. What more could a person want to help relax
Hey, lets me go there everyday and not feel so guilty. UMMM good stuff. have to lay off caffeine, and the yogart with strawberries and blueberries are great.
