I was in the computer shop the other day asking about the best option to get a solid connection 2 floors up, after showing me a couple of wireless network cards, he then shown me something (sorry can't remember what he said it was). But he said you plug one in by the router, and the other next to your computer, this apparently uses the copper wiring in the house, does anyone know what this is called, and if it's any good, thanks.
 
To be honest I am not sure I have never used them they used to be too expensive, I would think they must be if the purpose of them is to be faster and more reliable than a wireless connection.

I was saying how I always prefer to have a wired connection, but was left with no choice but to make it wireless, which is when he drawn my attention to this, I think I have pretty much persuaded myself, plus I see the link you have sent me is nearly as cheap as the network card he was going to sell me, at £40 I was a little bit hesitant, I do however have to wait until the end of the month when I get paid so hoping I can find one on offer, I'm tight, hate paying full price for anything.
 
Well let me know how you find them, i got a lot of wireless device in house so can be a bit of a drain, if i could get even just the computers or consoles on to power adapters like that would probably help out my wireless.

I am pretty much definite;y going to get one, so as soon as I do, I will report back, I have a horrible network card at the minute that manages 2 bars and always loses connection, but I just wen down about 10 minutes ago, unplugged the cordless phone next to the router, and I haven't lost connection since. Still a slow connection though, we do have a laptop and 2 phones using wireless in the house as well though.
 
I never buy wireless network cards, I have always found better speeds with wireless usb adapters, if you buy a decent one it comes with a cradle with quite a long cable so you can place it in a good open position.

I've always been put off usb adapters as people have told me network cards are better, I have only had one usb network adapter and it was poor, but I suppose it's like you say, buy a decent one, this had no cradle, my brother had one with one and I don't remember it losing connection once, but then his wasn't 2 floors away from the router, I can bring it up a floor, but then the bluray player and sky box would be without internet

Reporting back on the power line network adapter, sorry it took so long, unforeseen financial circumstances left me a little skint. I am now using the computer 2 floors away from the router, and it works brilliantly. Glad that works for you. I tried a set of those powerline adapters in my house a couple of years ago. There must be something hokey about my house wiring because I could only get them to work by plugging them into 2 outlets in the same room, on the same wall, about 10 feet apart. They wouldn't work using any of the other outlets in my house.

Hmm, that's strange, I guess I fell lucky then. I did originally plug the router one into an extension, it didn't work. Obviously being a man I didn't read the instructions, I thought you might have to plug it directly, but didn't want to as I wanted the socket. I then found out it said you have to plug it directly as some extensions have surge protection which can disrupt the data, tried it plugged directly and it worked fine ever since.
