wifi connection issues plz help

I am trying to use Netgear WGR614v10 and a Netgear WG111v2 usb adapter.

Windows XP SP 3, running avast antivirus, and zonealarm firewall.

The connection is very speratic. Sometimes I can turn the computer on and it takes 20 or so minutes of trying to connect to work. Sometimes it will stay on all day and others only 30 minutes.

I have tried to connect using the netgear software and connect letting windows do it. Seems to be same results. I was running WPA2 encryption and it was speratic, I took encryption off and it seemed to fix the problem. Today I have the problem again and is very difficult to get a connection.
 
Replace the router or try upgrading the firmware on it. That series of netgear routers aren't very good in my opinion. I bought one of those for a client and it couldn't even go say 25 feet around a corner down the hall.
 
I took your advice and tried a Linkys cisco router and low and behold I am at 100% and no issues. Can't ask for better. Thanks guys, sorry netgear..
