Wifi Disabled on HP DV2000 Laptop

I was given a HP DV2000 laptop about a year ago and it works fine with an ethernet cabe or a usb wifi adapter.

As a professional tinkerer with computers I am trying to get the builtin wifi card to work. Here's the setup:

The Wifi Switch on the case is on.

The Wireless Asistant software says the builtin Wifi has been disabled, go to Device manager and enables it, but it is not listed in the device manager to turn it on.

The other option is to enable the builtin wifi adapter in the system config in BIOS setup, but it's not listed there either.

I have pulled the wifi card and restarted and reinstalled it but the system does not see the reinstalled card. (I don't know if it's even noticed on restart anyway.)

I ordered another wifi card just incase this ones bad, but the replacement card IS seen by the Setup and I get an error message saying the install wifi card is not compatable with the DV2000.

I've already contacted the seller of the replacement card but that is another story.

My question is, How do I enable a builtin wifi card when the system says it's disabled, but at the same time the system can't find the card to enable it?

Thanks for any help

You may want to check HP for drivers for the wifi card. Doing a quick google search I was able to find the support site for HP. There are various drivers listed for XP and Vista machines.

I did the HP support driver update last week and the system says I already have the latest driver for the wifi card.

When I installed the replacement card yesterday the system quickly said."Card Not Compatible, Remove wifi card and restart." So it does see a wifi card during startup, but when I go to HP Wireless Assistant, it tells me the card is there, but it's been "Disabled."

And it says, go to device manager and enable or enable during startup in Setup.

Neither location has a Wifi Card identified TO enable.

I hope in a few days the correct replacement card will arrive and I'll know if the old card is bad. What do I do if the new card is invisible too?

In the time it takes to get here I'm willing to try any other ideas on
HP to locate the wifi card.

If I install the old wifi card but do not connect the antenna leads, will the system see the card differently?

Try to re-install the old wifi card completely as it was before. Take a look at this link:

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Wireless-Internet-Home-Networking/Wireless-button-stays-orange-Will-not-turn-on/td-p/913325/page/20

In that link various others have had issues similar to what you are experiencing. Particularly pages 19-21 of the thread contain some potential fixes to the issue.

I did the remove battery restart and install battery restart and the Wireless Asistant came on and showed the wireless card is ENABLED, and the orange wireless light turned blue, Yea I thought but the wireless card still was not visible in device manager or restart setup.

But the wifi still did not work, and was unable to find any wireless network even though I was sitting three feet away from the router.

It has to be a bad wifi card, and my replacemant seller wants to charge me to return the replacement card. So I'm looking for another seller to pick up another.

Thanks for the help and I'll repost after new wifi card is installed in hope it might help other person resolve their problem.

Buy the same card. Don't just go off a description "saying" it will work with the DV2000.

Help!

The new wifi card came in and when I started the laptop the screen went blank.
After every restart, the button lights on the laptop come on, the dvd light works, I can hear the cooling fans running and warm air is comming out the back. It appears to be on, but now the screen is black.

Seems agter I did the battery pull, restart, put the battery back in, restart, and hold the start button down for 30 seconds, the screen now is dead.

I've restarted at least 20 times over the last week but each time the laptop screen is black. I tried a separate external monitor and it's blank too.

This started after the restarting after pulling the battery and powering on with the power cord.

I need help to get the screen back on.

My two cents is to not waste time on it. It's a DV2000. In case you didn't know, the DV Series HP put out were absolute garbage.
