Hi!

I have a macbook pro and am using it for pro audio and maya but it only has so much hdd space! So i have a few terabyte samsung drives and was wondering if i wss to link a computer via ethernet to a wifi roiter and them use the wifi (wireless n) would this be quick enough to call up plugins on logic and projects etc and maya stuff etc?

If not does anyone have any other ideas?i wanna be able to sit anywhere in my room (like sofas/ bed etx etx) without a hdd being dragged along haha.

Thanks alot
Joe

You would be hard pressed to reliably stream multiple audio tracks (even at only 16/48) over a 100mbit ethernet connection, let alone a wireless connection. For audio or video work, you will be much better off working directly with the target media locally.

Working with a 3D project in Maya on the other hand might just be a bit slow when loading a large file, but shouldn't be too much of a problem for you.

Hey!

Thanks for the reply :)

I was going to do the music locally as I can understand the requirements of huge projects and latency etc. But could you load the plugins like native instruments from the wifi network?

What if it was a Gigabyte network?

Cheers

I have done video and audio editing over a Gigabit network. I believe Logic will allow you to work off network volumes, at least for playback. I can't remember if it balked at recording. The main problem you will run into is with large numbers of small read/write operations that come with doing this kind of work. This is where most network protocols fall short.

As for the virtual instruments, I'm not sure. Are you talking about storing large sample libraries on a remote volume? This is doable but with the same caveats as mentioned above. Or are you thinking of doing the remote processing option that Logic offers? This is actually pretty slick, but I have never tried it over a WiFi connection. You will have some latency issues, but this can be compensated for with large buffers. Obviously, the faster the network, the less latency you will have.

I'll have to try moving my Kontact sample library to my server and give it a try over my WiFi connection. I have never considered doing this before, but I am curious how it will perform. I am quite sure that the disk streaming will be flaky, but loading the samples into RAM should be fine. It will just take a little longer to load.
