WiFi from wired

I will be given an Android OS 7" Tablet soon that has WiFi built in, and I will want to download some additional 'apps'.
My setup at home has a wired router, so as cheaply as possible what do you recommend I use on my desktop to create a wireless setup to this Tablet? :)

There are loads of tools to do it for free!

If you have a mac, it can be easily done through internet sharing.

Otherwise use the windows program connectify, I heard something about that on the internet.

I'd just upgrade to a wireless router. That would be easiest.

Other method would to get a wireless repeater that connects via ethernet from the router to the repeater.

I'll probably go the wireless router with ADSL+ modem then, that way I can still run my desktop via phone line and ethernet cable with wireless connectivity for the Android.

Does that make sense:)

PS: It's my first dip into WiFi, always had ethernet in my own small room and use 3G for the Smartphone browsing, so make it easy for me :good:

If you have wireless on your desktop already, just creating an ad-hoc network (for your tablet to connect to) and enabling internet connection sharing on it might work, but I don't know what additional tinkering it would require (in any event, it won't cost anything to try).

If your current modem is any good, I'd recommend getting just a plain router with wireless (not a new modem+router combo), it should work out cheaper (should, I don't know if it actually makes much of a difference) and you get to use your existing modem and it's basically the exact same thing, except you have two devices (if the latter is a terrifying prospect, then get an modem router).

@voyager, not specific router recomendations, just what is my best option :good:

@hackapelite, thanks, that clarifies it for me. Think I will now go the whole hog with a wireless modem/router :good:

IF you have a DSL modem already, I'd just replace your wired router with a wireless one. Shouldn't be painful to do that.

It just got simpler (I think) :D

I pay monthly for Broadband, and 3 monthly for a landline. My provider has now offered me a 'bundle' for a one monthly price which works out cheaper, and they will throw in a wireless router/modem for free. :good:

Thanks for clarifying a few things.
