wifi reception improvment?

Im using the nighbors internet:D and i dont have very good reception. im using a linksys usb dongle receiver. i have read about using a pringles can or coffe can or mesh bowl. I also have a small satelitte dish on the roof we dont use ne more. what is the easiest and or best technique? i also had another idea. If using one of these techniques could i build a tripod that will autmatillcy turn towards signals? sounds complicated but it would be pretty sweet jsut the same
 
First, using your neighbors internet without consent is illegal.

Second, using a pringles can, coffee can, satellite dish, and other devices are also illegal unless you have an FCC license.

If you are allowed to use his internet, the only thing you can do from your part legally is move your computer as close as possible to your neighbors AP, if thats not possible you may want to install your own repeater as close as you can to his house.
 
people have been prosecuted for it when using without consent, I seem to remember a fairly large discussion we had on that on the forums some time back.

Just take it as a piece of friendly advice :)
 
This forum cannot be held liable for the info we give to you. By him telling you that, it shows that someone informed you of the legality of your situation.

If you want you can drop the Dongle and get an antenna an place it closer to the source of the WIFI, or out your window. Run the Antenna cord through the window and plug into your Slot.
 
A mod is gonna come in and shut this stupid person down. It is illegal to share anyone's connection. As stupid as you are its very easy for them to find out if they know how to configure the router, because the routers log the mac address of the card using the internet idiot. This is been reported most of the time we wouldn't be jerks but when you treat us like that we treat you the same way!
 
Hey im not calling u guys idiots and im not calling you stupid so why are you calling me that? i hate when people like you have to be jackasses to people who just dont happen to know everything. Im not trying to be a jerk i was just trying to find a solution to my problem and i really dont appreciate when people do that to me. Im sorry i dont know "everything"
 
You just have to listen to people its illegal simple as that and they can tell who is on it there are times i turn my secure off just so i can mess with people who decide to get on my connection its fun. Just dont share it get your own you can get decent 1mbs dsl for 1499 a month now thats not a lot thats like 2 trips to mcdonalds sheesh
 
actually the legality is a very grey area. You are allowed to set up a hot spot or broadcast your wifi with no encryption. There are no laws against doing that. Then you take into account about the subscriber of the internet service. If they don't want leechers then yes it could be considered illegal.

There are things like apartment buildings that broadcast and offer free wifi to their tenants. Really it would depend on how you argued your case in court for it to be illegal or legal. Anything that offers a hot spot is technically free game, unless they charge for it. I know that many of my friends have lived near coffee shops that offer free wifi and they use it from their apartment. Now if the business made it only to paying customers then that could be considered illegal. At the same time though, it is the coffee shops responsibility to secure the wireless. Like if they had a sign that said free wifi hotspot then its free. OTOH, if they said free wifi with any purchase then that is where it starts to become illegal.

Making home brew antennas is legal too, if you start broadcasting over FCC regulations then it becomes illegal.

Either way this is no hacking forum so you won't get much help from the people here. I don't mind talking about auditing security since I do it sometimes for clients of mine. I own hacking tools and assess people's and businesses networks with them. With their permission first of course.

Unauthourised access to someone's wireless network, encrypted or not, is illegal, and as such against the rules of the forum. Obtain his/her permission, then it becomes legal.

This thread will most likely be closed by a section moderator, in the mean time there is nothing more to add. Ironically, Greasemonkey, if you had asked broad questions about Wifi reception, nobody would have known about your motives, and would have been none the wiser. You live and learn. Also, read up on the forum rules.
