WiFi Setup

Hey. I want to setup a wireless network but I have one major concern. I would like to setup WiFi just for my phone and future laptop. I don't want my desktop computer on the wireless network seeing that I would have to buy a USB adapter for that. However, the wireless router would be connected to my cable modem which in turn, is connected to my desktop. Is this possible?

That will be pretty easy to set up, although it will be a little different than you are describing. Modems are only able to connect to one device at a time, so you wouldn't be able to have the modem connected to both the desktop and wireless router. What you would need to do is have the modem connected to the wireless router, which also has ports to connect wired devices, so you would have an ethernet cable coming from the router to your desktop.

Thanks very much for that info as I am a WiFi newbie. My desktop internet performance won't be affected right?

^ Depends. Having more than one computer using internet at a time can cause some lag, depending on your max bandwidth you are paying for and what they are doing (particularly downloading). Usually, no though. Also, I'd stay away with netgear. The 3 netgear routers i've used seem to have firmware problems (every once in a while kicking you off the wireless so you have to connect again, etc). Also, get one that's at least a G.

Well, given that it's only his laptop, desktop, and phone on the network, the only way it would slow is if he is using more than one at the same time or allowing someone else to connect.
