Will 2 pairs of different RAM work in unison

I've got an old computer I'm looking to upgrade. Right now it only has 256MB RAM and runs like shit.

The motherboard has 4 memory slots, currently storing 2 x 128mb and 2 x crimm.

Can there be 2 different sets of RAM, each pair a different amount of storage?

For example would 2 x 128mb in unison with 2 x 512 for a total 1.25gb?

Or do all 4 ram chips need to be equal in size.

The computer is a Dell Precision 340 if the answer depends on the board.
