Will an out of date bios really do this?

I had a post up earlier and arrived at this conclusion:

Everything powered up and fans spun...hard drives vibrated etc etc but no visual on the screen.

I called ASUS and i have the p6t with bios 1104 on it(it came out around the first of the year. I am pairing it with an i7 930 CPU. Apoparently this is not supported by the 1104 bios.

In turn, asus is sending me a new bios chip (since i can remove mine) and this is the 1303 update. This should then tell the motherboard that there is in face a CPU in there thus proceed with the boot process, right?

Keep in mind everything fires up but it just idles there with no loading screen. I dont have any spare parts to test. I am banking on it being an out of date bios.

Let me know if you guys think this could be the culprit.

Did you check anything else before assuming the BIOS was bad? Did you reset the CMOS? Did you check your video connections? Did you reseat your video card in a new slot (if available)?
 
Yupp...I was up till about 5 last night trying everything from different slots, to setting it up on a peice of cardboard outside of the case piece by piece with nothing changing in any combination i did.

all power is set, connections solid. PSU is good, everything is getting juice. tried different cables to the components too since the PSU is modular. its a corsair 1000W.

Let me know what else i could be missing Omega. I have the chip to behere tomorrow. but in the mean time id love to trouble shoot more
 
And oh yes, I did reset the CMOS. I took out the battery, disconnect the PSU cable left it out over night. Did a PSU reset by holding the pwr button for a min with PSU unplugged...tried it all....

That was my first culprit. I thought the CMOS needed reset since the new components may not be recognized by mobo
 
Judging by his other thread, yeah he tried these. Didn't you also say that Asus as sending you a BIOS chip with the latest version on there?

In any case, if it boots but doesn't POST it's either a RAM or CPU issue... I remember trying to use a core 2 duo in a 775 board that only supported up to pentium d, and it gave me a black screen ;)

Also, when my overclock gave me memory issues, blank screen. If you've tried reseating the memory then just wait for the bios chip to arrive.
 
Yeah i gave it all a whirl. Im gonna just wait up on this bios chip and hope all is well.

Hopefully i put it in and everything fires up...if not, i am gonna be in a whole world of hurt trying to figure this out.

You never checked the video card in another computer or another video card in your computer!? :rolleyes:

I hope this BIOS chip works out for you, but my gut tells me it may very well be that your video card was DOA - it happens. It wouldn't take an hour to call a local computer shop, stop in with your box and try one of their working PCI video cards in your computer just to check.
 
I am hoping it is the bios too. I stopped into geek squad and explained my situation to him with the i7 930 not being recognized by the p6t. he seemed to understand and suggested the same thing with a bios needing updated.

It essentially powers up WILL NOT beep because it thinks there is no CPU there. So it continues on as if the computer thinks all components are present but not the brains of the operation.

What do you think dean? The video card seems fine to me, it spins, and it gets hot

But i cannot test beeps because it thinks there is no CPU in the mobo. I thought my speaker was dead. Not sure how to test if it is, but its fairly simply system i dont think my speaker would be DOA.

Chip will be here tomorrow at 12PM fedex overnight. Better fire up!

As I've said before - I'd put the vid card in another computer to see if it works, or put a known-to-work video card in your computer. Simple as that - wouldn't take a minute.

But if ASUS and the tech at Geek Squad and The_Other_One all think it's the BIOS chip, then it probably is. It would just give me peace of mind knowing that it is definitely not the video card. But that's just me.

I agree 110% dean. If i had a computer that I could put it into and test, i absolutely would. All my roomies and friends have Macs. The only person I know that has a gaming computer is out of town for the weekend and even at that his is FUBAR, so i would NOT want to put my shiny new 5870 in that.

Check back tomorrow around noon...thats when fedex is supposed to be here with the part.

Got my fingers crossed...
