Will C2D E6700 work on same mother C2D E6420

So....

I am trying to buy a cheap Dell Dimension or Inspiron and then swap out the cheap processor/gpu/etc with better components without the steep markups. Often times, Dimension and Inspirons do not let you upgrade to E6700 or anything strong, I'm assuming to drive you to buy the overpriced XPS systems.

What I am wondering is if I can take out the cpu from the Dimension, be it a C2D E6420 (the fastest you can upgrade to), and buy a E6700 off Amazon and install that in its place? I know they are both socket 775 but I am not sure if the motherboard will be able to handle the E6700, or if the power supply would support the stronger cpu.

I am also considering doing it with the gpu, but I figured I'd tackle the cpu question first. Any help with this would be awesome, thanks guys.

i believe it would work, but if you were going to do all of that i would just go ahead and build a new one if possible, the bios will be locked on that mother board being from dell. You might could use some parts off of it to save some money like the hard drive.

What are the rest of the specs?
 
The build I'd customize up would be...

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4300 (1.8GHz, 800 FSB)
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 4DIMMs
320GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
Dual Drives: 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 16x DVD+/-RW
256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE
IEEE 1394 Adapter

Dell doesnt seem to provide info on seemingly important info like motherboard type, power supply unit, etc.

I'd hope to kick the cpu up to a E6700 and the gpu up to something like a GEforce 8xxx series.

I figured after fiddling with the site that if I was able to upgrade that dimension system above, I would save about $500 compared to if those components were in an XPS case.
 
it depends what motherboard they put in there. i believe the e6700 has a faster FSB than the e6420, so if the chipset doesnt support that faster FSB, it is a waste. im not sure i would risk it, seeing as the money you would spend on a "cheap" dell could be put toward building a new computer from scratch, and then you know it would work. its like saying you are going to buy a honda civic but drop in the engine from a corvette. it might fit in the hole, but who knows if it will work
 
the E4300 has 800Mhz bus, the E6700 has a 1066Mhz bus, and the E6750 has a 1333Mhz bus. I know both the E4300 and E6700 would be easily interchangeable, but im not sure what motherboard dell uses, because it may not support processors with a 1333Mhz bus.
