Will Damn Small Linux(or other) run on this old machine?

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has any experience running a light-weight linux distro with firefox and possibly open office(not nearly as important as firefox) on a P III 800mhz with 265-384mb or RAM and 10+gb hard drive?

Is there a linux distro that will let you run firefox on machine like this without pulling your hair out because of slowness?

Thanks in advance.

PS. It should be noted that Damn Small Linux includes an older version of Firefox which probably takes less RAM than newer versions.

Yes DSL will run on that. DSL only takes 4mb, I believe of ram to run. I was running DSL on a pc with 400mhz proc and only 256mb of ram and it ran well.

DSL will run fine on that... in fact, I've run Ubuntu on PIII and 256MB of RAM before... it was a little slow though... you could try Xubuntu though... it's lighter-weight than Ubuntu, but the interface is much better than DSL (Xubuntu uses XFCE while DSL uses Fluxbox.)

I would recommend Xubuntu as well. You could also try ubuntu but use some lighter-weight apps, ie abiword instead of openoffice, etc.

yeah its like 50mb and runs on 24mb ram (less if you use a more lightwesight xserver) / pentium 166

dude that pc could run an unbloated, but full distro, like debian or centos, or even windows xp, just fine

Yeah what I'm really worried about is will firefox run well on it.

exactly.

openoffice may be a little slow though, but it should still be usable

may want to look into something lighter like abiword instead.

For older computers I'd recommend Xubuntu. With the alternative CD you can install with only 128MB. I'm running ubuntu on my old desktop with a Pentium III 933mhz processer, 384MB of RAM, and a 60GB HD. Works great.
