Will doubling up on Ram help game performance

Even a little bit?

I appreciate that my system is getting on now..

Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
i7 920 (DO) @3.8GHz
8GB HyperX FURY
MSI GTX 970
XFX PRO 750 Modular
Noctua NH-D14
1920x1200 Monitor

The majority of stuff I play is old skool/GOG classics & emulators etc but occasionally I'll fire up the likes of Witcher 3, Tomb Raider, the recent Doom etc & I've preordered the new Deus Ex.. I often have to dial down the graphical bells & whistles a bit with the newer stuff, but most still run surprisingly well.
Another 8GB of my ram is pretty cheap atm, am I likely to see much of a difference in the newer games if I install it?

If you have to dial down the graphics in some games, adding more RAM won't allow you to run the games on higher graphics settings. You'd need to upgrade your GPU.

Your CPU is quite old these days though, so upgrading your mobo and CPU down the road will definitely help, and also prevent bottleneck with a stronger GPU.

If it's not enough then it will make a difference for random stutters, but it won't increase your FPS or detail in games.

You can pop open task manager while playing, if it's under ~85% utilization or so then you'll see a minimal difference with more RAM. Other components like the CPU may be holding you back to a larger degree, granted it's still a reasonable performer at 3.8 GHz.

More ram's going to benefit you in day to day activities (ie. browsing the net, multi-tasking, etc..) and provide a smoother Windows operation. At 8GBs currently, you shouldn't see any difference in gaming.

You could do what I did and grab a W3690, or a X5690 off ebay used for around ~$150. It's basically a Xeon branded i7-990X. It'll offer better multi-threaded performance and a ok~ish single threaded performance upgrade, but that's about it.

Other than that, you may want to look into getting a new cpu/mobo for the future.

What resolution are you playing at? The i7 920 is an older CPU now so yes upgrading in the future to a new platform would be a good idea, but with the 970 most games should be able to play OK. Have you tried to remove and reinstall your GPU drivers with the method I've explained here? http://www.computerforum.com/thread...all-graphics-drivers-amd-nvidia-intel.230370/ that might be the first step to try.

Upgrading to 16GB of RAM won't help as the others have said.
