Will eject, won't read

My girlfriend dropped her laptop and the hard drive was replaced because of it. Now the CD drive won't read a disk, says please insert. When she puts it in, it spins up and then stops. The drive is visible in my computer and if you click eject it will eject. How do we fix this?

More than likely the drive is bad. Try booting to some bootable disk and see if it works outside of Windows. If not, then just replace it. Most laptop drives aren't too expensive.

The eye that reads the disk is most likely damaged. The only thing to do would be to get a new drive basically.

you might try putting the drive in an identical laptop. that would eliminate all hardware possibilities.
