Will I be able to run Oblivion at highest settings at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 using this computer:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (754)
1GB PC 3200
ATi Radeon AGP X850XT

I'm almost certain I can, I just wanted to find out whether I can before I recieve the parts.

Also, I know LCD's have a native resolution, but I can't tell what it is when running games. I think it's 1024x768 from my desktop icons size, but does it really matter if I play games @ 1280x1024? It just makes the menu's small, it doesn't make the screen "mucky" like some people say.

Thanks in advance.

Not if you want AA/AF. Take a look at http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/oblivion_high-end_performance/. It doesn't include an X850XT, but your video card is slightly better than the 6800GT they've tested. Given that they were using an FX-57 with 2GB of RAM, don't expect your performance to be any better than that 6800GT, though.

As you can see, the framerates quickly drop to unplayabe levels, even at 1024x768 with 0xAA and 8xAF, particularly in the foliage areas.

Ok, thanks. In my opinion those frame rates are playable (bearing in mind that I can't use HDR). Can someone answer my second question as well?

if your desktop is running at the native resolution ive always thought it best to run your games at the desktop resolution.
also, running games at the native resolution will ensure that the image produced is at its best quality.

also, i very much doubt your system will be able to run at max detail... i dont think there are many systems out there that could do this

I'm sorry but no you will not, sure everyone got their opinion on what playable and not.

In areas with heavy foliage, battles with multiple characters and sometimes rain/fire, my 6800GT (running at ultra speed) chokes down to 15fps with dips as low as 7-8fps. This is at 1024x768 everything maxed (without HDR). If I disable grass then theres no problem, but whats the fun in that? It spoils much of the ingame feeling. I'm going to replace my card though for a better one because I want to experience this game at 1280x1024, which to me is the sweetspot for gaming.

Also, you should go through this nice tweak guide to optimize the game.

Check what reslution your desktop is running at, and whether its the native one. Then try and run the game at the same. This is the reason I dislike LCD's, they should be run at the native no matter what to look good, making the graphics card much more important than on CRT's.
