will i get into some trouble?

ok, my school uses a network with different drives used for different things. (ex. Drive T contains teacher files that can only be edited by a teacher or administrater, drive S contains student files that can be edited by any student.) well there is a Drive R that is student accesable and usually empty unless a student puts their personal files in it or something. About a week ago there was a folder called "Accelerated Reader" which is the name of a program that is used for taking reading comprehension tests, i thought this was a students file or maybe a backup for the actual Accelerated Reader folder, so i thought it would be funny to change this folder to "Do Not Open". Well now im suspended for 5 days because that was an important file and somehow by changing the name it messed up their network and messed up a few student's grades. now they are contemplating calling the state police about this because it cost them some money for their tech people to work overtime. My principal said is was a possible Felony :eek: but i didnt KNOW that i was messing with peoples grades or by no means did i have any intention to cause any trouble. Do you think i have anything to worry about? I would appreciate any replies
 
not a felon, they can't charge you for that... they give you access to the computer. Though it wasn't the brightest thing to do, but they shouldn't have had it student accessible
 
Ahh, don't worry about it, I have had my fun... I would constantly change stuff in the drives. I put games on their and encrypted the files so they couldn't be opened without a password nor deleted... I had some ppl really mad... I taped optical mice, I taped ethernet cables, I would put different mice and keyboards on other computers, and I did this especially around the time of statewide standardized tests. They had an auction at the school offices for a lot of HDD's, guess who won an auction, and they still had info on them. That was dumb on the schools part... I found a few keys to closed doors :D

its not a crime at all. Its not captured by the computer missuse act...well not to my understanding of it.
I could be a civil matter
Personally Im not sure how your schools are run but if this was the UK id go to the governors to get it overturned

They have an obligation to provide a level of protection to there own system; it is a duty of care. By allowing free access to this application was a failure in there meeting this obligation, which is a worse mistake than the one you made.

They way they will assess blame in a civil matter is on the concept of the "reasonable man". This means, in attempting to determine if you should have known that changing the filename would have the consequence that resulted, they will consider what a reasonable man would have been expected to know.

I dont know what the heck your parents are doing allowing the school to treat you this way, if this were my son id march down to the school and demand the punishment be revoked, if they cant provide even the most basic level of security on there IT systems then you certainly cant punish someone so harshly when these failures are exposed. Id tell the guy that unless he wishes me to speak to the education authority about his negligence in protecting information and his willingness to allow a disproportionate and detrimental punishment on a child’s education rather than accept the negligence within his departments then he better revoke his punishment.

If it ain't yours, don't mess with it!

Even kids need to be held accountable for their actions!

This is basically trapping him into trouble.... Crap!! Can't think of the word for this...

This is nothing but fun at school... They should be proud that they have a student that knows even how to change a filename, in computer illiterate America...

i never said I wouldnt punish him, but I am the parent and I do the punishing, schools shouldnt suspend a kid for an action like this, its not like he is being voilent, or a distraction to kids. They are punishing him because they are embarased about what happends, how about they stand up and be accountable for that.

Now I would of course punish the lad appropriatley and he wouldnt do it again, the same result would occur except there isnt a blight in his education nor a gap in his knowledge.

well, my dad had a pretty long argument with my principal the day after i was suspended but the principal is just not changing any of the punishments. I dont understand why i can't go to school cause im missing some important classes (i have 2 Honors classes and AP calc). Another thing is I have no history of getting in trouble or anyhing like that, I get straight A's and participate in sports year round
 
Now in a lighter tone, Accelerated Reader is about stupid of a program as there ever will be... Microsoft should make it :rolleyes: I remember when an admin was trying to update it, and he had the office announce to the whole school "Do NOT log into Accelerated Reader". Well, guess what? Someone must've thought (In idiotic deep accent with eyes crossed and head turned sideways) "DURR! I need to log into this." And it was a teacher so, the whole program had to be reinstalled b/c the whole thing was now corrupt on the network. The admin went and told the principal that they could do without it for a few weeks, the principal approved. There was an overabundance of smiling faces on the literature faculty(sarcasm).

Accelerated Reader? That's an FREAKING JOKE RIGHT? A.R. ?!??! OMFG You're freakin joking right?

In my years, that was basically - Read an boot, A.R. it, get points. Points = Test grade every 9 weeks. A.R. will NOT mess up student scores, and renaming it should be no problem! They would just be "cannot be saved" blah, but A.R.?!!?

Same way here... I had to read like 10 300 page books a semester in order to get my credit... Here's the secret, when taking the evaluation test, flunk it. Then it will give you a lower points requirement and there you go, you can read lower level books... I was too 'dumb' at the time to flunk the test, so my point requirement was humongous. And, if you got 100% of your point requirement you got 100%, if you did any more you got extra credit... So, I didn't do any of my literature classwork/homework, I just read a bunch of books and got the extra credit and came out of the class with an A+. I was the cause of the teacher to change her grading system, this has been years and years ago...
