Will it be enough?

I've got a AMD Athlon XP 2800+... bought it in August of '04.

I've been running it on the stock cooler and heatsink since I bought it and it seems to be okay since I don't run anything super intensive.

At idle it will only drop to 46 degress celsius.

Under load it has gone between 55-60 degrees. This comes when playing Madden '05, NBA Live '05, America's Army, etc.

My case temp is a steady 26-29C almost all the time except under certain games.

I'd really like to get my CPU running cooler and I will soon be acquiring the Thermaltake Extreme Volcano 12 for the CPU.

I plan on learning how to overclock my CPU so as to get some more bang for my buck.

My questions:

1: What are decent running temperatures for a CPU and system? Is there a goal I should try to get my temp down to?

2: Is the thermaltake going to be enough to keep my CPU cool when I overclock?

3: How much should I expect when overclocking my 2800+?

4: Anything else you think I should know before going on with this.

Thanks in advance,

I'm shocked... this is such a prestigeous forum and no one bothered to help me out.

Oh well, that's probably just the selfish side of me kicking in.

I read all the 101's, I just want to know if this looks doable for my system.

I've got a piece-o-crud mobo that's a PC Chips (ECS) M863G, a standard AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Barton - and 1GB of PC3200 400MHz Samsung DDR SDRAM.

Please... anyone?

A CPU idle usually (and I say usually) is around 30-45 or 50C, mine is idle at 25C but that is because I have good airflow.

Depends on how much you plan to OC.

3: How much should I expect when overclocking my 2800+?

Not a whole bunch, but be careful not to push it too hard too fast or you may cause damage to the CPU.

Your temps are ok at the moment. When OC'ing on air it's more a case of trying to stop your temps from going up rather than trying to get them down

For the most part you should get a decent oc on stock cooling, especially amd. If you intend to really push the overclock envolope you may need a some exotic cooling, but thats bleeding edge stuff. You TT will be good

Unfortunatly no one can tell you this for sure, but i would hope to get a good 400-600 PR points

Take a look around your bios setting and see what option are changeable. Then get back to us

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I've studied my BIOS in and out and there is no option for overclocking the processor. I can only change it from 100-133-166 to make it between 1.25GHz and it's standard 2.083GHz.

I downloaded ClockGen but it freezes my PC when I hit apply changes.

I just recently overclocked a AMD 64 3000+ on someone else's PC from 2.00 to 2.32GHz with great success, but that's only because the motherboard had this great and easy option to overclock the CPU.

What can I do? I'm really not expecting much, I'd just like to see if I can get this XP 2800+ to perform at the XP 3000+ level.

well, looks to me like you have a motherboard that doesnt support overclocking. did you buy it from a company such as HP?
most companies dont give an option in the motherboards that they sell.
