Will it kill my cpu's life span?

Ok, so i overclocked my cpu by using CPUFSB and monitored it with CPU-Z. My CPU is a Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz with HT. I overclocked it to 3.006. When i clocked it to 3.2 it ran ok, then with 3.4 it was a no go, i got a BSOD. So i decided to stick with 3.006 or will it make a big difference if i clock it to 3.2? Also, IMPORTANT: My case is Small Form Factor (very low air circulation). And anothing, will it hurt my cpu's life span?

TIA,

1. It is usually better to OC with the BIOS on the motherboard.
2. Having it in a small case like that isnt the best, but with a P4 there isnt much you could do to make it better. It will run WAY hot.

He's saying you can OC it but do it from BIOS you might get more stable OC's and get that 3.4... I think that's what he's saying anyways.

well you guys might think im retarded but the computer im using to over clock is a Dell Optiplex GX270, so im not sure i can OC from the bios. Unless you guys can tell me how, which would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

No one thinks you're retarded. Just take a look around in your bios for cpu voltages and fsb.

Its a Dell, the bios should or will be locked. If he wants to OC the way hes doing it now would probably be the only way... if its stable at 3Ghz, i dont think it will shorten life span... other components will most likely go out way before the CPU does anyhow

Overclocking wont decrease the life of your processor to any noticable degree. Unless you burn it out by over-overclocking it or physically damage it, as with most computer parts they are designed to last forever. Which also is an issue because you cant dispose of a computer like you can with normal household trash. Metals and plastics can be recycled, food will decompose, but a computer and electronics can only be stored like nuclear waste, and release harmful chemicals into the Earth if they are disposed of normally.

If you're worried about it dont overclock.

what do you mean by copy & paste? Well with HT enabled i dont really see a big diff between p4 Ht and Pentium D dual core.

Thanks. I see you use a P4 as well. :D

usually OCing will not do any damge to your processor

these are the basic rules i follow

1. keep your cpu running at normal operating temperatures

2. keep your cpu voltage stock

Yeah, like send said, just keep it within the cpus specific voltage range, and keep the temperatures good.

Well, if you don't want to effect the cpu life that much, you'd stick with recommended voltages and temps, otherwise in your case i'd raise it some if you need, it's not that big of a deal.
