will mobo support 6Gb/s with a PCIx card?

My mobo has onboard SATA headers that only support 3Gb/s. If I put in a PCIx1 or x16 card with SATA headers that support 6Gb/s, will my mobo be able to operate with that data transfer speed with an internal hard drive that can operate at that speed??

A 1x card won't have the bus bandwidth to run 6Gb/s but otherwise it should work.
