Will My Computer Accept 2GB?

Hey guys, been a lurking member since 2008. I finally have something here I can't seem to find by searching!

I have a 2006 WinXP Gateway MX7118 ('04 eMachines design, love it because all ports are in the back). The computer has 512 MB 333 MHz DDR (1×512 MB) SODIMM (PC2700) attached to the motherboard and one expansion slot (currently occupied by a second 512 chip). (Click for full MX7118 specs)

Gateway's site says my computer is "Expandable to 2 GB." Since the 512 MB is there under the keyboard, and they don't make 1.5 GB chips, I'm assuming that means I'm able to add one single 2 GB chip for a total of 2 GB. Gateway support guy (who wasn't too knowledgeable) said that if I add 2 GB the 512 MB will become unusable, so I'd be running with 2 GB, which would be fine with me. BUT, every single memory site I go to besides Gateway seems to say that the MX7118's expansion slot will only accept a 1 GB chip in the expansion slot. Examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Through searching, I found that the "built-in" 512 MB chip is accessible by opening up the machine, which I can do. I want as much RAM possible because I will install Windows 7.

  • 4 GB Scenario: Put 2 GB in expansion slot + 2 GB in motherboard (MB wouldn't recognize it all though, right?)
  • 2-2.5 GB: Put 2 GB in expansion slot (and MB may or may not recognize both the 2 GB and the pre-installed 512).
  • 2 GB: 1 GB + 1 GB, one in expansion slot, one on MB
  • 1.5 GB: 1 GB in expansion slot and run Win7 with only 1.5 GB :(

Also, my motherboard's bus speed is 1600 MHz. Would that accommodate PC3200 400 MHz RAM? Would it put any added strain on the motherboard or cause it to overheat? Would this 400 MHz RAM be any improvement, or should I just stick to 333 Mhz? Can you mix and mach 333 and 400 on the same computer (333 on MB and 400 in expansion slot)?

Sorry for the detailed questions about an old computer. I'm just hoping that one person knows! Thanks!

I dont think it would read a 2gb stick. With a 2gb limit, its probably 1gb stick in each slot for a max of 2gb.

Thanks, I appreciate the response. I think I'll go with the 1 GB + 1 GB. I have a couple more questions, though.

1. Would getting 400 MHz be worth it instead of the 333 MHz? Bus speed is 1600 MHz, would the MB support it? Gateway support says it will not work and will damage the motherboard. I of course don't want to do it if this is true.

2. Is 400 MHz really any faster?

3. I was thinking of getting PNY but I heard that Crucial technology is good. Any brands you recommend?

4. What does "unbuffered" mean? Will it work? It says that here (Crucial RAM I was considering).

5. To replace the 8 cell Lithium ion battery, should I buy an expensive one from Gateway, buy a cheap one on Ebay (which probably are very low quality), or should I open up the compartment and solder together my own? Batt is old and I want one to last me a good 3-4 hours like it used to when it was new.

New batt, new RAM, new OS. Computer is going to be like new again! Thanks again, guys!

I'm finding that 512 stick is non-removable. Which means you can add 1x1GB 333 to the 1 available slot for a 1.5GB max.

Have you pulled it apart and tried it?

I ask because I saw a photo of someone who'd taking their MX7118 apart and the slot on the motherboard was empty, meaning he got it out somehow! Same shape as the regular RAM upgrade slot too.
