Will this air duster wreck my mobo?

Hello,
I have never cleaned out my PCs before but it needs to be done. I cannot find cans of pure compressed air at any shops near me. I found this stuff but dont know if it is suitable. Also I would like to use a brush to get rid of large clumps of dust. Are there any kinds of brushes I should stay away from and what should i be looking for. Thanks.

Hi mate, i'm guessing your in OZ too.

You can use either of these two items below or the one from Tandy(which is also available from Dicksmith). i currently use these on our PC's at work & home. Regarding the one from Helmar... make sure you get the "non-flamable gas" version.

Before spraying the PC with the air. Get your vacumcleaner and attach any of the "plastic" attachments to the end, then vacum your pc... make sure you dont suck any loose jumper plugs off.

Tips for use:
1. hold the can upright while using and dont tip past about 45deg while using otherwise it will spray out a "mist" of moisture(while compressed in the can the air is a liquid)
2. Don't shake the can while using it other wise you'll spray the mist over everything again.
3. If you do spray the mist on something, turn the thing off then making sure you dont spray more mist, use the air can to dry out the thing.
4. Got a can/bottle of drink you want cooled down? hold the can upside down then spray the drink can with it... it will spray out a supercold get of moisture onto the can of drink.

i've just always opted for using a vacuum... never needed to get any cleaner. sometimes i take off the cpu heatsink, that get real dirty sometimes

Yes I am in OZ and where I live there are no good electronics shops, just a small tandy so I will be buying the stuff from there. I wasnt to sure because the guy in the tandy store said it probably had a mix of air and some ethonal.

I guess i have one more question. The tandy store guy also showed me contact cleaner. (can be looked at if u seach 'contact cleaner' on the www.tandy.com.au site) This stuff is flammable but is it also suitable to clean the delicate insides of my PC.

From what I can gather, dust away get rid of big bits of dust and contact cleaner gets rid of the smaller particles making the componants shine. Thanks


PS what about brushes to remove away dust?

LOL.... "Huff-puff"= rubber bulb with spout, you squeze & it expells the air through tiny nozzel (great to work that RSI out of your hand hehehe) you can buy one from a camera shop and will have a brush on the end of it too.

If you have a credit card you should be able to buy from Jaycar on-line or over the phone. Jaycar is a much better "electronics" store... tandy/dicksmith sells stuf for the "Yes i've opened a PC...once" kind of people.

BRUSHES. Almost any synthetic brush will do the trick. Just make sure you get a softish one... bristles at least 1.5inch long would be good. You should be able to get this from tandy in a PC Tool kit or just a paintbrush from your local hardware store. P.S. you don't need to "scrub" the components, just lightly brush them.

CONTACT Cleaners: If you have a credit card you should be able to buy from Jaycar on-line or over the phone.

Airduster gets rid of most dust, but you need the brush to make the rest of it loose... and for on the heatsinks n fans.
You would only need the Electronic cleaner if you've spilt your coffee on part of your PC... or if the CAPs in your PS blow and spray crap alover everything :mad:
