If I will download it will it change anything in my set up or wipe out anything that I will need to reinstall?

If you currently have Windows 8 installed it will just apply like a service pack.

If you don't have windows 8.1, and you are running a windows 7 or something, I recomend to buy a new hard drive, and down load the windows 8 to that, just to be safe. And you can move everything to the new hard drive.

In either case, it's always a good idea to backup your data before installing a major service pack or OS upgrade.
