Win.8

Just ordered a laptop that will have win. 8. Can I change it to look like win. 7? From what I've seen and heard of win 8 I don't want any part of it. I don't care for touch either.

You could at least try using it for a few minutes. They provide a pretty similar experience.

You can bring back the start menu with something like Classic Shell

IMO, Win 8 already looks and acts pretty much like Win 7. The part that is new is called Metro or Mui (Modern User Interface). That new part is strictly optional. Most likely your new machine will have Win 8.1 which gives you the option to boot straight to the desktop, Win 8 requires you to click once to get to the desktop.

The one thing that is missing from the desktop that many users can't seem to live without is the Start button. For those who need it, there are 3rd party addins such as Classic Shell that can be installed to bring it back.

I appreciate y'all's help. I'll give Win. 8 a fair shot, but it's nice that I can change it. Actually XP has always been my favorite OS. I think I'll be getting 8.1.

win8 looks nothing like, nor works like win7.but there are a number of programs that will make it look and act like win7.start menu 8 from iobit is a good free program for this.

When I reloaded my desktop I decided to give 8.1 a shot. Installed ClassicShell and haven't had any issues.

There are two things you should do. Install ClassicShell to bring back the traditional start menu, and change the desktop settings so it boots right to the desktop.

Thanks guys, you have given me some great advice.

By the way, it doesn't come with a cd or dvd player. That fine because if I need one I can get one that connects to the usb.

Shhh! Don't tell my Win 7 & Win 8 machines that. They look, work and act much the same without those 3rd party programs. I bounce back and forth bwteen Win 7 and Win 8 machines all day long and barely notice the difference. I use the same set of programs on each.

Not sure how to send pms on here, but anything you can tell me about going back and forth from win. 8 and win. 7, would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just so you understand what he meant, he meant he uses both Windows 7 PC's and Windows 8 PC's. He wasn't talking about dual-booting.

Exactly. I haven't bothered with dual booting in years. if I do wish to run more than 1 OS on a machine nowadays, I use VMs.
