i have recently added the home edition(xp) disc to my computer which is stilll running on windows 98 and it says that i dnt hav the appropriate updates...does this mean that i need internet connection to allow me to activate xp?

just boot to the cd and reformat through the windows setup.. then download the latest updates through the MS website.

have no idea how 2 do that...i put in cd but it wont let me load it on and says that i need updates.. u r saying that i need to update it first??

In you set up your system BIOS to boot from the CD drive when you turn you computer on. Press F2 before Windows start to load on your computer. When it boot from the CD, you should be able to reformat through the windows setup :D

ALL DATA ON THE SYSTEM WILL BE LOST

i like to tell people this ahead of time since some do not know this.
when starting your computer, start tapping f2 (or del or whatever the computer tells you to press to enter system setup).
once there, find the option for the boot sequence and make sure that the cdrom is selected as the first device.
insert the windows xp cd, then restarty the system
it will probably prompt you at some time to press any key to boot to cd. as soon as you see this, press the spacebar as it only gives you roughly 3 seconds

then, after setup is finished initializing and it gives you options, press enter to install a fresh copy of windows
f8 to agree to EULA.
then, press esc to continue installing windows.
when at the partition screen, highlight any partition listed other then 'unpartitioned space' and press D
then press enter
then press l
repeat that for each partition listed
once finished with that, highlight unpartitioned space, press enter
next screen should ask you what file system to use, personally i perfer NTFS and nothing else. i don't personally care for the NTFS (quick) or fat. but that's up to you
then it should start formating. the rest is self explanitory

not sure exactly what you mean there sauce. but from what i understand of it, you're wanting to know if you would still to partition the drive to use windows 98 correct? if that's the case, yes. in order to run windows, it needs a partition in order to be installed
think of windows as a house. every house that is built needs to have a foundation. the partition is like the foundation for windows.

i hope that helps to answer your question

thanx
