Hello People,

Win 98se
HDD : 8Gb
Ram : 64Mb
Pr: 433Gz Celeron

Need to install xp on spare box so my new mp3 player will will work.
thats ALL i need xp for so performance wise it needs to load up, throw on my music and thats it. I know my spec is krud but i figure it wont be too heavy duty as only 2 programes will use it.

My rough plan is to partition a new drive E: about 1.5 Gig with PMagic/fdisc. Then Install xp pro onto this drive. Run a dual boot.

Should I use a boot manager or none at all ?
My file system shudn't be a problem as i never chose to compress it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

The minumum space for XP Pro is 2.5 GB

I dont know if that's enough Ram for XP.

Are you doing a dual boot?

If you are, i guess you will have to re-install 98se. I beleive you need to install XP LAST, because i am told that XP will recognize the other OS and not overwrite it. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong. Unfortunately, that also means that it will default boot to XP unless you intervene.

Cheers

How fast is the cpu in the old boat anchor? If that's an old 586 case XP may not even run on it let alone run WMP. A common small drive for replacement would be about 20gb not 15gb unless you have an old WD 13gb or Maxtor 16gb model hanging around. XP often creates larger swap files were more drive space is needed to accomidate it. Plus you plan to download mp3 files? A good look at a 30 or 40gb drive would be better there.

You can't seriously be thinking about running xp on 64mb of ram!
It would take you hours of frustration just to complete a simple task, not to mention how slow that processor is.
Why do you need xp anyway? You don't need to use a media player to put the songs on the mp3 player, or even the drivers for it. Just plug it in and you should see it as a drive in my computer, then just drag the songs to it and you're done. 98 should be fine!

I haven't seen 64mb since I added memory on an old AST I486 machine. The cpu speed at the time was only 66mhz! 95 ran somewhat normal there after moving up from WIN3.1. But trying 98 on it at the time was fright  due to slow the dang machine ran with it. I soon moved into an AMD setup running at 500mhz to solve that fast. This is one to consider when trying to setup a multimedia system where you want a degree of quality seen there.

okay :

Ive good news and bad news.

The good news is that everything worked perfect.

The bad news is that you pesky nay sayers have egg all over your pasty white faces.

Partitioned drive for xp with 2.7 Gb. with Partition Magic.

Installed win xp home edition.

Runs fine on my 433GZ celeron with 64Megs Ram.

Start up takes abit longer but it runs WMP10 like one guy said it wudnt and runs my mp3 player software too.

Ive had to switch off all but the bare essentials and run in classic spec but thats okay for a system from 1999.

Win 98se partition works fine especially after drive letter re mapping. dual boot is pretty sweet too.

Web is faster than before but i still may use 98se for torrents and process heavy activities.

It can be done - Partition Magic very useful especially the excellent resue floppies which can run the entire program.

Not bad for a noob.
Cheers guys.

Ok, listen, just a note for everyone. We need to stop telling people to upgrade, such as add more ram, or get a bigger hdd. These are lazy excuses, and not everyone can just afford to do all this stuff. Most of what we do here is to face the challenge and try to get it working. He didn't need to play games or anything, he just needed Xp for one thing, and I ran Xp comfortably on a 366 MHz system with 64MB of ram before, it did what it had to for me.

If you will note the question asked about processor speed. As for minimum system requirements you simply go to Microsoft for details.

Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition
• PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

Exactly, and if you turn off all but what you need in the services, it runs just fine on 64mb for what you'd be needing on a machine of that power.
