Higuys my son brought me his Laptop sony vaio for me to fix a win vista problem
but couldn'tfix it so i downloaded an win iso from Digital.com,thinking it was Vista iso but it's not it's Win 7,now i installed it asked for the key but as i thought the key is not valid but skiped it said get on line, then it installed and upgraded and it's running fine,i wonderthat i don't see anything in the system that sais this is not activated! i once did a Iso of win 7 and after i installed it had an worning saying that i had to activate the key, kinda strange.

After that, you have 30 day trial to update with a legit cd key.

edit --- I believe it's a 30 day trial....could be 14, not too sure on that...... ;)

The Vista Key for that VIO system will not activate Windows 7. Since you did an upgrade install of Windows Vista to Windows 7 there isn't a way to go back to Vista without reinstalling the OS from scratch. I see two options:

1. Buy a legit Windows 7 key and either activate the install or do a fresh install of Windows 7

2. Get a copy of Windows Vista and do a fresh install with the key on the COA sticker on the laptop.

Windows 7 gives you 30 days to activate, and you can install it without using a key.

You'd have to either obtain a Vista ISO or purchase Windows 7 (or 8 if so desired).

Beers. Do not provide advice on how to circumvent the Windows activation process. It is against the forum rules.

Advice on how to crack or circumvent legitimate software activation. This includes: key generators; cracked executable files; re-arming software trial periods; brute force methods for obtaining activation keys; OEM activation hacks, etc.

Maybe you should give them a re read:

It's not circumventing. It just extends the trial period, and that command can only be used three times (for a total of 120 day trial period) before it won't work anymore and Windows will just say it's not a legitimate copy.

What do you think the rules means when its talking about rearming trial periods? Thats exactly what he was providing...

If Microsoft didn't want you to be able to extend the trial period, they wouldn't have given you the ability to do so.

You have got to get this straight, the rules are very simple to understand. It causes all kinds of confusion when a mod says its fine, it direct contradiction to the rules. This is not the first time this has happened recently. Either change the rules or apply them... its pretty simple.

It's not a hack. It's a legitimate utility built into the operating system. It's not an external key generator, crack, activator, etc. After the trial period ends, you need to either enter a key or else you don't get updates. You can still use the OS; it's not like XP where it completely locks you out.

Mate, i understand what you're saying... but how is this not clear??

This may be because if you read the Windows 7 software license agreement,

...you must activate Windows 7 within 30 days of installation. You are not permitted to bypass or circumvent product activation. After 30 days, you must either enter a genuine Windows 7 product key for the edition you installed, or remove Windows 7 by reformatting the hard drive it is installed on.

Well, whatever, he's going to have to purchase a key for Windows 7 (or get a copy of Vista or something else to install) at some point, regardless of how long the grace period is.

OP already said he's gonna install Linux, so I think we're done here.

As far as the rearm command, it's being discussed between the mods.

While there is some value for the rearm command (i.e. when you are having activation issues which are no fault of your own), for our purposes it's going to fall under the rearming trial periods rule.

I've cleaned up the actual command.
