Win ME and 98 setup stuck at the same position

Windows ME and 98 both stuck during installations at the exact same position where the setup does a scan on our hardware ( after which the actual installation for windows begin ). Everything works fine till the bar reaches 99% and then all activities stop.

I can't understand what can be the problem, XP installs and works fine!
 
What kind of computer are we referring to here? Perhaps some of the hardware is just too new and the older copies of windows are a bit confused :P

I don't know what you need 98 or ME for, but have you considered a virtual machine? I know 98 installs just fine on VMWare.
 
I am using the same hardware for quiet some time now and 98 and ME used to work fine on it, it started happening since i got a REVISED version of my older motherboard when i claimed its warranty. Could that be a problem?

Just realized something, setup doesn't hangs while it is detecting hardware, instead it hangs when the setup wizard is running at the beginning of the installation ( stops at 100% while the mouse pointer is displaying busy status )
 
yet another reason for me to despise windows me lol. if xp is too much for the pc you should try runin windows 2000 instead. i like it much better. it doesnt need nearly as much as xp but is a much nicer os than me. ive had problems like that before with other setups and it ended up being there was either a scratch on the disc or a corrupted file.
