I tried using linux, but it's not for me...so I want to install my 32bit win xp pro, the question is can I upgrade it with this $40 upgrade to 64 bit win pro? My specs are in my signature, and as you can see it is scary to even think about using them with 32bit win xp...:D

no. You have t upgrade from 32 bit to 32 bit. You can do a clean install of the 64 bit though.

And for gods sake, dual boot the linux. Don't give up on it. The only limiting factor is knowledge, and all the knowledge is out there if you look for it.

You can upgrade 32-bit OS to newer 32-bit OS.
You can upgrade 64-bit OS to newer 64-bit OS.
You CANNOT upgrade 32-bit OS to newer 64-bit OS.

So in your case you need to do clean/full installation using the full Windows 8 disk and NOT the upgrade disk.

Cheers!

I'm kidding on giving up on linux, I'm just tired of trying to get it to work on my external usb hard drive...:D

You should be able to do a partial upgrade from XP 32-bit to Win8 64-bit, in that you can keep your files and whatnot. If I were you though, I'd backup your files somewhere else, and do a clean install with the upgrade disk. Activation isn't an issue if you do a PC refresh in the Settings app afterwards.

Partial upgrade... what? I don't have any important files so I'm not even going to bother with a backup...

Then just boot from the DVD (burn one if you haven't or put it on a USB drive) and install it from there.

Still, I don't get what you mean by a partial upgrade? Do you mean that trick that when you create a boot cd, it asks you whether you want to install 32/64 bit, and then I should just choose 64 bit, and even though my XP is 32 bit it will update it to 64 bit win 8?

Yes, but you can't do this using Upgrade Assistant. If your PC has a 64-bit capable processor (CPU) but is currently running a 32-bit version of Windows, you can install a 64-bit version of Windows 8 Pro, but you'll need to buy it as a DVD and perform a custom installation. If available in your country or region, you can buy Windows 8 Pro from a participating retail store.

Ok, so I have to download 64 bit windows 7 or vista, then not activate it, purchase an upgrade cd to windows 8 professional and install it using custom installation, then when it asks me I have to choose to install a 64 bit version.:good: Oh, and by the way specs of this pc are in my signature, I believe that the i7-950 is a 64 bit capable processor.

Now I'm 100% sure that I can upgrade 32bit xp to 64bit win 8 because I checked out this microsoft website, and it says that it is possible if I purchase a dvd.
