hello first post newbie...need help..........

i am trying to do a fresh install of xp home sp2 on a shuttle xpc
2.8ghz pentium4
1gb ram
80gb hdd
win xp sp2 operatinG system

problem i having is when i boot it goes to cd-rom partitions and formats the hdd...
then loads files for xp....then says first part done need to reboot and install will resume on restart............
but when it restarts it starts all over either saying windows files are already on the hdd press to leave them and continue or reformat and partition again..........it loads some files then says need to restart and then right back to the begining.....its never resumes to install xp......just starts over everytime.......any suggestions??

hdd boot?

i never had to do that b4 if i have the cd rom first it will just keep rebooting from cd?....so is normal operation hdd then cd?......will it bypass the hdd if it doesn't find an os?........

When you first start a install from the CD it load files on the harddrive. When you reboot you reboot to the harddrive, after that it just accesses the CD for additional files. If you keep booting the the CD it just starts the install over again.

When it reboots and you get a message saying press any key to boot to cd, DON'T press a key, let it go on its own. Or its possible you need to change the boot sequence back to HDD first in the bios after you start the install and before it boots back up again.

must b other probs....

if i switch it...it comes up with w disk read error.................

or will pop up a screen system checking system hardware then just hangs..................something else is going on.......i know the os cd is fine used it before on other pc.............

the cd rom is ok.......used it before.......but the hdd.....might be suspect....although it will load the os files to it.....then can detect there is already xp files on it...........but.....something is going on...............

i am begining to think shuttle pc's r just crap...lol

I think your missing what they are saying , after the files are loaded and the system reboots dont go in bios and set the boot order back to HDD , all you have to do is nothing in other words when the files are loaded and the pc reboots then it says push any key to boot from cd dont just leave it and it should carry on with the install.

I know what they are saying.....

this is what happens bios set boot to cdrom first then hdd....
it will format hdd and load xp files ...then need to restart it restarts then just boots from cd and starts all over wanting to reformat or says xp files already installed want to delete them and install new ones.........

never gives option of press any key to boot from cd...............in either configuration.....

if i set bios to hdd first then cd........either 2 of these things happens...
boots setup to point of saying detecting system hardware...then hangs..on blk screen

or says disk read error ctrl+alt+del......to restart...............

it doesn't go past hdd to look for cd-rom................

now does prim master, secondary master, or slave configurations make a difference????

all devices are set to cable select.........but if cd is set to primary slave n hdd to secondary master make a diff........???...........

Ok, we may be making progress here. Describe your setup please. Is your hard drive IDE? If you have 2 separate IDE channels on your motherboard, you should always have the hard drive on a separate channel then the cdrom drive. If you have the hard drive and cdrom on the same cable then the hard drive needs to be jumpered as master and the cdrom as slave. But describe your setup with what device is jumpered as either master, slave or cable select. If its cable select I also need to know what connector on the cable its connected to.

Pc

Running a p4 motherboard

ide 80gig hdd
ide cd rom

2 channels on board ............
Both devices set to cable select on different cables and channels............
Hdd cable has 2 connectors with hdd plugged into master end of cable
cd rom ide only has one connector plugged in the end..................

I have tried both on same cable with cable select only in primary channel

and have tried hdd on prim and cd on sec different cables
and the opposite ......hdd on sec and cd on primary........................

Put hard drive on primary ide channel jumpered to master and put on the end of the ide cable.

Put the cdrom on the secondary IDE channel jumpered to master and put on the end of the ide cable.

If you follow this then you should not have any problems from now on.
