im setting up my brothers new comp. its an old hd but a new mobo and cpu. for some reason i had problems with the product key, and had to talk to microsoft for an hour to generate a new one.
i got that fixed, and installed windows normally. i didnt make a password for the account, however, i get this message when attempting to log in,

"The system cannot log you in due to the following error:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Please try again or consult your system admin."

i didnt think it was a big deal. i restarted in safe-mode and logon to "admin". it says, "enter password". whatdya know, same error message.

plz tell me i dont have to refomat and install :(

Sounds like something got messed up in the install process. Are you connected to a large network?, because then maybe the server does something when it detects a new machine.

im not connected to network, although i do think something got messed up in install. i ended up reformatting. sucky but effective.

Well the asy thing to do would have been to..

Start the computer Regularly.. When prompted for the pw press ctrl+alt+del and with the new login box type administrator and no password... This will allow you to delete change create a new login.. without a domain! (which is enable by right clicking my computer and going properties... and click the button that says change..)

:) easy huh!
