the problem i,m getting is when i start up laptop i have avast it keeps detecting win32 ad-agent(adw) i have tried deleting quarantining but then wen i restart win xp i get same message i have also tried disabling system restore and spybot microsoft antispyware SpywareBlaster but still no joy

Sounds like AVG is picking up a trojan/spyware. Follow the basic steps outlined in post I posted in this thread. That should take care of it, whether virus or spyware, (unless you got one of the newer hijacks which i doubt.). Good luck
