I think you can delete it but not directly and for most people, it's not advised. You can delete it (i think) by eliminating your swap-file/virtual-memory in System settings :)
 
You dont HAVE to but there are cases where you might WANT to (i.e., say you're doing DVD encoding or animation or stuff like that and you want to make absolutely sure that you use the RAM rather than the virtual memory)

It depends on what you do on that computer. No need for gigs of RAM if you just type text in Word...
 
Indeed. If you're doing stuff that needs 2-4GB of memory, you're gonna be doing stuff that needs CRAPLOADS of virtual memory (quite possibly dedicated drives for that purpose).

I recently cleaned up my computer and managed to get rid of 2 gigs of space. Satisfied with my cleanup I restarted my computer and noticed the 2 gigs was BACK!!! All the stuff I deleted was still gone but now this 'win386.swp' file was now over 2 gigs in size!!! I know for a fact that it wasn't before, not even close. So does this so called virtual memory store deleted files to? If so, why? And is there any way to check what's inside this memory so i can finally get rid of this nonsense. Thx
