Win8.1 64bit needs a driver!

Try to install Win8.1 64bit having formatted c:/ drive, and after a few prelims say it needs a media driver! It has obviously booted from disc so DVD driver must be working so what is it looking for??

Go into device manager, right click on the device needing a driver and click on properties. Then click on the details tab. You may need to change the property to hardware ID, then give me the 4 digit vendor and device ID numbers. They look like this ven_xxxx and dev_yyyy where x and y are 4 alpha numeric digits.

Can't go to device manager cos don't have an os! The install process is asking for the driver just after going thro the language selection process and clicking on the "Install" button. Any idea?

Sorry misunderstood you. Do you have raid setup in the bios? As long as the sata controller is set to ahci or ide/compatibility then you should have no need to install driver at the beginning.

OK, thanks will need to check that tomorrow so will report back. Now you mention it I do re-call seeing something about that a while ago - memory not what it used to be!!

So you are installing from a dvd correct? Try changing out the dvd drive and also make sure the dvd drive is plugged into a sata port that is set to Sata IDE only. May have issues if its plugged into a port setup for ahci. What motherboard do you have?

I had the same issue going to Windows 7 from Vista. Wiped the drive and tried to load 7. This is when it happened. Banged my head for a while. Then swapped out the cd/dvd drive and that fixed it. The drive that was originally in the PC was too slow. Sometime after that, I had a friend run into the same issue. He was using a ISO image and did another download, burned to dvd and then loaded. This fixed his issue.

By the way, the cd/dvd drive I removed and replaced works in a PC that has XP just fine.

Enter the bios prior to installing and disable USB 3.0. If you're trying to install the OS using a USB stick, use a USB2.0 port on the back (ie motherboard). Remove all non-necessary hardware.

OK, looks like problem is solved! Took advice from above and disconnected other HDD, burnt disc image onto different dvd , checked that BIOS showed correct HDD in boot options and, would you believe it - everything loaded correctly with no probs. Many thanks for the suggestions and Happy Xmas to all you helpful people!!☺
