WINCHESTER VS VENICE for A64

Hey guys, could anyone clarify what the problem is with the memory controller that the Winnie has that the Venice core is correcting? I heard that it has something to do with all 4 slots occupied and Winnie's inability to operate above 333Mhz in that case. Is that true? Do any of you have the experience with that.

Yes that is the correction in the memory controller. With the winnie when you fill up all 4-Dimm's you get problems running at a higher speed, i think overclocking is cut back ALOT.

With the Venice they corrected that problem and made it possible to fill all DIMM's and still be able to run your RAM at the desired speeds.

One drawback with the Venice though, the memory benchmakr scores are a bit lower than the Winnie. In making it compatilbe they had to cut back a bit on performance, so you will see a small drawback in say Sandra Memory Benchmark.

But if you need all 4-DIMM's then i'd say it's definetly worth it. If you're just running 2 sticks then sure, you'll be down a few points. Who cares about bencies though? Just have fun:)

Question

So If I choose to fill up three slots with let's say 400Mhz DDR ram at 512 each, and still go with the Winnie, then do you think it will still work at 400Mhz? I was also wondering how it would behave (even with 2 sticks) at 500Mhz for example when using the 1:1 ratio of "FSB" to Memory. I am supposing I have dual channel turned off in both cases.

For a winnie i think you can run any size module in dual channel or 3-DIMM's without any problems (even when overclocking). It's when you fill that 4th one that people sometimes get errors or they lose stability when trying to overclock.

But for best overclocking i think you just want 2 sticks, thats just an accepted standard most everywhere. Potentially harder to get 4 sticks of RAM that all have the same likes/dislikes and overclocking abilities.

Cool

I see your point and I tend to think the same of it. Thanx. I will most likely go for the Venice just in case anyway. Thanx.
