Window vista issues

Hello all, I've been experiencing issues with two Acer laptops. Sorry if this isn't posted in the right area and if I sound like a n00b, I'm more of a car guy then a computer guy. This site turned up when I googled computer forums, so here I am.

Both laptops are Acer Aspire 7520 series, running vista. (Bought from shopping channel yeah shush)
32 bit system (what does that mean anyways?)
3gb ram

The first computer started not wanting to turn on, it would just go to the loading screen, and load for hours and hours, I did a d2d system restore and it started no problem, but now it will sometimes show a white screen with black dashes across it. Any idea whats going on?

As for the second computer, whenever I go to google, the first time I click on a result it takes me to a random website, and the second time I click it brings me to the right website. This happens for every result, everytime I google something. Is this a virus of some sort?

I'm looking to learn more about computers, be able to fix my own, and make them faster. I think this is a good place to increase my knowledge. Hopefully I won't get bashed to hard here, I've seen some rough forums.

Thanks,
Stan

Support for Windows Vista without any service packs installed ended on April 13, 2010. To continue receiving security updates for Windows, make sure you’re running Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (SP2).

service packs? where do I get these or check which one I have? Why do I need service packs... shouldnt the original version of vista just work in its original form?
