i have question about window vista product key which i took note of at a store! it was a display model i got product key since it wasnt hooked up on the internet! i was wondering if i could use it! it goes like this 45678-OEM-34567-72897-! I was wondering what OEM is only 3 digits will it still work when i install window vista will it accept 3 digits ?

Thats not the CD Key, you are probably looking at the serial number of the packaging or the registration number of that particular version of Windows. Windows Vista (as well as most others) use a 5x5 method for their CD Key, such as this.

XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Correct :)

What he is seeing is the "Product ID". The one that activates vista is the "Product Key".

even if that was the right code, it would be illegal.

I believe it wouldn't work. I tried that before with a Windows XP Pro key off a IMB laptop and it didn't work.

the product keys are hashed and batched, most likely it wouldn't work even he had the proper key. Since vista is so DRM heavy I don't even know what side effects would even happen from pirating it.

Just go buy the OS, or go with a free one like Linux.

Thats because CD Keys from manufacturers such as IBM are only for IBM computers.

Microsoft needs all the people it can get for Vista, you don't even need to pay for Vista. The OS lets you install it with a 30 day "evaluation" period, without the need of a CD Key. It even lets you extend that another 30 days by a simple command via the CMD (up to 180 days with no limitations). Unlike XP, you also don't need to have the OS activated in order to receive updates or download certain programs from Microsoft.com

It also slowly disables features until you buy and activate. Which is why it is so DRM heavy, which is one reason why I won't support vista. That, and it doesn't offer any performance gain and hardly any benefit gain from upgrading. However, that is an old and busted argument and I will stop right there.

As far as licensing goes, read the EULA, if you can stomach it. You will clearly see that in a trial period you are obligated to certain policies and how MS has the right to do whatever they want while in eval period so on and so forth and all that legalese. Notice the DRM clauses as well, and notice how you never own it, you just lease it.

trust me, its a marketing scheme to lock you into buying it. Think about it, how many people will want to just fork out the money after using it for 60 days then getting a ton of features reduced, over reinstalling the OS or switching to another OS?

Which features are locked out? When I waited 30 days before activating mine I didn't notice anything that no longer functioned or had limited usability. The only thing I noticed was a dialog box which said you have XX amount of days to activate.

If you ask me Windows XP was more strict when it came to licensing, since you couldn't run Windows Update without your copy being validated/activated, you couldn't download many things from the Microsoft website, and it wouldn't even let you install XP without a legit CD Key.

MS never got rid of WGA, it is alive and kicking in vista, the only difference is that you get a trial period now.

however it looks like MS may be changing reduced functionality mode, or at least they are "renaming it"

Oh ya I've heard of that, it's when you go over your evaluation period or if they determine you are using a pirated version of Windows. All you can do is either activate over the internet/phone, or go to the Microsoft website and purchase an OS. During the evaluation period though there are no limitations (at least that i'm aware of).

ok what if i collect the product key under laptops u know the sticker! that will work right?

also is there a software that dectets vista product key?

NO, you have to buy the software. Nothing is free, get used to that now before you get older.

First off, quit putting exclamation points at the end of everything you say. And second, quit right now. Pirating software is wrong and you shouldn't do it. Switch to a free alternative (Linux).

I've been using the '30 Day Evaluation Period' for nearly 6 months.. this is my second re-install, and I have every feature Vista Ultimate has to offer.

That won't work because the product keys on those laptops and desktops are OEM.. and, when you try to activate them you'll be forced to do it by phone, which isn't normally a problem, but the product activation code (not the key, but the code provided for phone activation) provided to you by your copy of Vista won't match the one Microsuck has in their system. They might ask you a few questions, such as 'has this been installed on another machine' or 'is this your first time activating this copy of Vista', and they might even ask you to verify the manufacturer of the computer that key came from.. in the end, you'll be left with a copy of Vista that will turn into a 'reduced functionality' OS after 3 days (that's how many days before Vista OEM tries to auto-activate itself.. and it will fail since it requires phone activation)

Regardless, you're best bet is to hit up newegg for a legit copy of Vista, or run the trial and re-install it every 180 days.. there are hacks available, but they can leave your PC vulnerable to intrusion.

Do you really think you're going to convince someone to switch to another OS by talking to them like they're stupid?
