windows 7 copy of windows not genuine

My mom's computer has this in the lower right corner with "windows 7 copy of windows not genuine" "Build 7601" above it. The background screen is black and it won't accept screen saver or background. Initially it will accept them but reverts back to black. I called Microsoft and all hey want is 89.99 or 149.99 to fix the issue which I believe could be repair by someone here. What do i do? Thanks! Oh and we don't have a registration code or a disc it was loaded on when new.

It's most likely because you haven't activated the copy yet. Who installed the Operating System for you? The key would be with the dvd they used to install it.

Ok I fixed it by removing update KB971033 and reentering the activation code. This stuff is crap. I hope MS doesn't do that in later versions. Thanks anyway John!

By the sounds of it you have an illegal version windows, that update is the windows activation tool which checks if the operating system is genuine and has been bought legitmately.

The problem will re-occur until you buy a legitamate version.
