Windows 7 major problem

Hello again,

It seems I am flooding the forum with all sorts of questions, but it seems Windows -- especially Windows 7 -- hates me and I truely am sorry for being such a bother. I hope you can forgive me and my Windows novice level.

So we have started the Windows 7 install today on our 500GB drive and at first, it worked. Booted in the first time, installed 98 updates, but there was no sound. I knew this was a problem, but I did not expect it to be this bad. So after the updates finished, we restarted the computer as directed and when it booted up, our Windows 7 was gone, but not fully. We could see the stuff on the drive, but it would not boot into it.

Now I am stuck in a system recovery loop. There are four different system restore points, but none of them work (I get a error 0x000fff for restore points). I created a system repair disc, but it doesn't help either, actually, it doesn't seem to be any different than not having a disc. It says all my information is there, but it will not boot into Windows after it updates now.

We have tried reinstalling the system now four times and each time it installs and activates properly, but the problem above happens over and over again after it turns off and especially so after updates.

Specs:
Asus p5l-mx MOBO
Two drives: Ubuntu 11.10 (I am in currently), 162 GB | Windows 7, 500GB -- refuses to work.
Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrade designed for Windows Vista)

Problems:
(Previously, our product key wasn't working. But support got it to work and now it takes the product key with no problem)

Windows 7 'breaks' after updates and system shut offs
No sound in Windows but sound in Ubuntu
System restore doesn't work
System repair loop

Please, if anyone knows how to fix this, I would greatly appreciate it. My work is with Photoshop and Windows programs.

P.S

If BIOS infomation needs to be given, I will sit down and either write it all down and their settings, or try and take pictures of it. And once more, I am truly sorry for all the questons I have been asking lately. :(

1. Load BIOS omtimized defaults and save...

2. Format the entire HDD using Active Kill Disk.(JUST BE SURE TO FORMAT THE ENTIRE HDD AND NOT SOME OF IT'S PARTITIONS)...

3. Install Windows 7 again (BE SURE THAT THE DISK IS NOT DAMAGED OR THAT IT IS NOT MADE FOR SOME OTHER COMPUTER)...

4. DO NOT INSTALL ANY UPDATES!This is the problem in most of the people. They install TONS of the updates which they do NOT need at all.So do NOT install updates.Install ONLY those which you REALLY need. And when I say REALLY NEED,I mean that you should install ONLY THOSE update(s) which are needed if:

-specific program you are using NEEDS a specific update to work...

-your operating system has a specific bug which OCCURS to you and disturbs your work and NEEDS a specific update to fix that...

-compatibility issues...

-other

So do NOT install ANY updates.Believe me you do not need them.Updates are designed to fix the specific problem(s) and people SHOULD download them AND install them, but ONLY if you HAVE that specific problem(s).If you do NOT have those problem(s) then there is no point in installing update(s) to fix those problem(s) you do NOT have at all.

If you need some extreme help which cannot be provided on this forum, you can always contact my UAC service and they will help you for free:

UAC-services@hotmail.com

But I hope that won't be neccessary. So just try what I suggested above and report back with the results.

Cheers!

Thank you for the replies, S.T.A.R.S.! This was was becoming a very big problem. :o

Active Kill Disk? You mean this (The Windows-DOS download?)? How would I use it if I don't have Windows 7 working? Would I log into Ubuntu to do this? *Oh, if I forgot to mention it, I am dual booting between Ubuntu and Windows 7*

I didn't know you didn't have to install the updates, news to me. Alright then, next install I won't install updates unless needed. I hope I can tell if some are needed or not. :p

Thank you very much S.T.A.R.S.! I'll start on your suggestions as soon as I know what to do with the Active Kill Disk download. :o

It is easy to tell when you need an update. Just ask yourself "am I experiencing any bugs with windows?". If you are, look for a update that covers your bug and only install that one update.

I meant telling by the update after I know I need one. I've never seen descriptions of what the update does, just the names of it. But then again, I wasn't the one to handle the updates before, so I'll just keep an eye out. :)

The red square is the knowledge base (like a microsoft encyclopedia) number. You can google it and it will tell you detailed info on what it fixes.

The blue square will generally give you some limited info on what the update is.

Oh! Thank you very much for the information, wolfeking! I will do so from now -- assuming I get the install to stay.

*I'm not very use to Windows -- Ubuntu is what I am use to using.*

I agree! I have been using it for a very long time, since 2003. Love the writer in it too, and the Ubuntu 11.10 app store. :D

That actually leads me to the next question. Since I am dual booting, should I take the Ubuntu drive out -- after I make the Active Kill Disk boot CD and run it, assuming that's how I use this software -- so I don't accidentally delete Ubuntu instead of cleaning the Windows drive?

Ive never really used killdisk, but DBAN, you can select which drive you want to nuke. Just for safety though, take the SATA cable off your Ubuntu drive before hand.

Also, use the Gutman method if it allows (35 passes). It will take quite a bit of time to accomplish. You wont need to format before you start the windows install though, the Windows disk formats the partition in NTFS anyway.

Alright then, I'll unhook the SATA cables and select Gutman method if I can. I'm guessing it doesn't matter if you use DOS or Windows-DOS, so I just downloaded what this tutorial said and burned it.

I'll be starting the process now and will report back if anything happens. Oh I hope it works. :)

EDIT:
Started it. There was no Gutman method to select, not from what I've seen. Only allowed 1 pass, not sure what actually means. It says 2:30:09 left....I hope it solves my problem. :)

EDIT 2:

Alright, it is installed and validated again. It wants to know about updates. Do I say "Ask me later" and turn updates off?

Update;

We have installed Windows 7 and installed none of the updates and restarted; same problem. But, I disconnected the SATA cables after I turned it off and then connected them back, turned on and it worked. Most of the time I have to go into the BIOS, exit, and then it boots directly into Windows 7 fine.

I've turned the computer off a total of 34 times so far, and its been fine. What could cause this to happen? Bad SATA cables?
