I was just given a Gatway M305CRV laptop computer with a 2.22 GHz Single Core Celeron and 256mb of RAM.
It had XP on it but it was full of viruses and practicly ruined... So I modded Win7 to run on 256mb and installed it on there, just to see the difference. And from what I see, I think it may be acting slower. So what would the best WINDOWS OS to put on this: 7 or XP, and also what version?
PLEASE REPLAY FAST, THANKYOU!

Heres a challenge for yah!
Go on Ebay and buy an old IBM or packard Bell with a 400mhz pentium 2 processor and 32mb of ram. Put windows 7 on that, or even.....VISTA! LOL Talkin about a bsod every minute...:)

Challenge? BSOD? that ancient thing can't even run Windows 98 right.

windows 7 and xp both are very fantastic operating system but Also I have used only windows 7 operating system for my old computer. It is really work very nice. I have update windows 7 operating system. Windows xp is also nice operating system.

You know what? Ubuntu is nice operating system. Fedora is nice operating system. Linux Mint is nice operating system.

Sorry, just had to add some Linux input :D

Also it would help if you listed the specs and age of said old computer. These days the machine could be 5 years old and it's called ancient (at least in my case ;)).

I would call gateway pay the $10 get all the disks and completely wipe that system out. Start fresh with XP as with 7 you would need alot more RaM for it and now adays that old laptop RaM isnt too cheap. Am thinking 1 gig for that computer would be like $35 or so and then the $10 to get the factory CDs such as OP, drivers, restore CDs..

I have an ancient laptop that I use for browsing all the time and it is a dell d600 with 2 gigs of ram and old pent 4. Works wonderfully if you just browsing or traveling.

I wouldnt even dare put 7 on this laptop cause there is no need as XP is just fine and uses alot less memory.
