Windows 7 OS tips

OK chaps, I may be one of the few that never upgraded to Vista so the jump from XP to W7 is quite a difference. I've had it installed a day now and as far as I can see everything is still here but in a different place :D
Anyone have any tips on performance, best ways to achieve anything, any hidden little gems we should know about, things to turn on or off to increase performance (I mean services etc). In fact anything usefully on this OS.

here is a list of the services i have turned off:

Bitlocker
windows media center scheduler service
windows font cache service
windows cardspace
NMIndexing Service
Remote access auto connection manager
remote access connection manager
remote registry (hackers/viruses/trojans will use this service)
Windows backup (i don't use it)
Remote desktop configuration
windows image acquisition
microsoft software shadow copy provider
tablet pc input service
remote desktop services
volume shadow copy
windows defender
windows remote management
parental controls
windows search

been a learning curve for me. Using windows 7 Pro ver.
love the windows media center. can watch tv in hi def and local channels.
Seems to save or has an option to save everything i look at though. like videos from youtube.

Another thing comes to mind. Hardware and software. the hardware issues has all been related to usb. Other has been software ive always used in the past with XP. If you run into problems and after installation right click the exe short cut where ever it is. Troubleshoot compatibly. try recommended settings 1st. if that does not do it then do it again. right click the exe short cut troubleshoot compatibility then troubleshoot program. you can pick like xp service pack 3, 2 or 1. you can go through the list of all options and keep changing it until it works.

Hardware has been another problem. tried device manager the hardware and find a better driver. no new driver available or can not find. I don't remember where but somewhere like control panel hardware or where ever i was able to find the driver for this sucker and make it happen. lots of options somewhere to change something somewhere else in the system. its just mostly an adventure for me.

for the link at microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/what-is-windows-7.aspx pay attention to help and how to and downloads. just choose the system you have. it can get you butt out of a bind.
cheers............

1. If you have a windows.old, you can get rid of it with this command in cmd

rd /s /q c:\windows.old

2. if you do not need the hibernation file, delete it with this command in cmd

powercfg -h off

In both cases you will save quite some disk space.

The ones in bold are stopped by default, so disabling them is pointless.

one thing that drove me crazy on win 7, may not happen for everyone, is the network sharing service it would constantly eat up cpu usage, usually around 80% even when i wasnt sharing anything, i think this this due in part to the Libraries function be very clutter with music, either way i turned it off an that really helped with system perfomance

Cheers chaps.
How about W7 defragger, has it moved on a bit since XP days or do you still use a third party one?
When I had XP I used Defraggler but won't bother if the W7 one is up to the job.

I still user third party defrag in 7...i used Defraggler too.

Im not saying the one built into 7 isnt up to the job....its just slow at doing it.
