Windows 7 Slow?

Does anyone else (who has a standard 7200Rpm Hard drive) think that Windows 7 is slow at booting, even a fresh install?...compared to other Operating systems?

Ive tried Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows Xp,Both load way way faster to the desktop and are instantly responsive as soon as it appears....where as with 7 it takes a good 40-50 seconds to load to desktop....then its still not fully responsive for 10-15 seconds when the desktop appears....all of which are fresh clean installs btw.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this who Use/Experiment with diffrent Operating systems...

well we have had slow boots and log in's with the school computers with windows 7 but that was because we were using a hp Universal printer driver

Mmmm. That's strange.

I'm running W7 64 U on a very old 5400RPM 60GB hard drive and despite that my set up boots up pretty quickly.

How much RAM are you running?

Im running on 4gb with Q6600 @ 3.5Ghz...i dont think its my system,Its not that im saying windows 7 is slow altogether and crap....its just the boot up phase for me is slow...i want to be up in the desktop asap,Like i said Ubuntu gets booted realy fast.

Well Ubuntu has a lot less to load but I can see what you mean. I can't load any programs for about 10 sec after I see my desktop. That is always how windows has been for me. You can try to see if there is anything that you can uncheck in msconfig.

the wonderfull world of solid state hard drives.... i cant belive im selling mine and have to put up with the old spinning disks :(

Yes XP is def faster then Win 7 when it comes to boot up times. But, Win 7 is also alot more fancy and safer than xp also. With newer os's comes more information to boot.

Windows 7 is almost as slow as vista is. XP is faster and more user friendly than vista or W7 will ever be.

Windows 7 takes 18 seconds to boot here according to a gadget I have. But I do get a 740mb read speed/595mb write on the C drive (Raid 0 across 8 drives). I find it just as fast on my laptop, where that takes 40 seconds to load.....

What, :| That's just wrong. XP is horrible by today's standards!

When I upgraded from XP to 7 in January it was very fast booting, a lot faster than XP when that was fresh. It's now slowed up as they do over time but nowhere near as bad as XP after a few months use.
Windows 7 gets to a usable desktop a lot faster than my previous OS's, usually a big slowdown is caused by driver problems when loading.

I know my Windows 7 x64 loads pretty fast, after you put in the user accounts password its about 5 seconds before i can start using it.

It can also be some virus that's slowing your PC down. Try to reinstall your windows 7 OS and see if somethings changed or improved. If not then you should backup your files and try to format your PC.

Thats quick but I've seen my friend's pc and hes also using win 7 and boots up 10-15 secs. Compared to my vista w/c took 40 or more secs to boot.

Me, too. Win7 was slow for a week or two after I installed it, but I found out that it's because 7 likes to make a list of things and optimize itself for a bit. After that, 7 actually reaches 0-3% CPU usage when idling-just like when I had XP. And I've got a rather "slow" system, with an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (single-core :(), 2.5 GB RAM, and a nVidia 7300 GT GPU with 256 MB VRAM. 7 IS AWSOME.

It boots fast for me too. Not sure why it boots slower on your system. You do have a perfect set-up and that seems strange.

I've had my install of 7 for two months-and it only takes 18-25 secs to load on my considerably slow system-AMD Athlon 64 3500+ at 2.2 GHz (single core), 2.5 GB DDR RAM 400 MHz, 7200 RPM Seagate 7200.7. If you're having slow boot times, try defragging or cleaning and optimizing your registry with a registry optimizer-works wonders.
