From internal Best Buy memo, Best Buy to pre-sell Windows 7 upgrade version for $49.99. Microsoft says Windows 7 won't ship till mid-October

From Engaget "starting on June 26th, Best Buy will begin "pre-selling" the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade ($49.99) and the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade ($99.99). Have a look at the full letter below, and if you've come here for advice, here's the best we've got: don't buy a PC at Best Buy until June 26th."

If you buy a PC after June 26th, Best Buy will give you a free copy of the upgrade.

This was reported on Leo Laporte's TWIT broadcast. Highly recommended if you're into Tech and Tech News.

This is only for new OEM machines purchased from Best Buy, which is actually a program that Microsoft created for all OEMs that participate, regardless of where they're purchased. Those of us that build our own rigs are ineligible.

June 26th - July 11th - they are having the Pre-sale - as mentioned in url in OP.

It looks like for those 16 days on Bestbuy.com - anybody can purchase it. OEM or not. It's worth keeping an eye on. If I can pick up an OEM version of Windows 7 for $49 bucks - I'll ditch the RC and just purchase the Pre-sale price.

Yup, I think that's the case. That looks like a good deal, only you have to wait until October to receive the upgrade. Is that right? This leads me to believe that the Windows 7 upgrade will be more affordable than the XP -> Vista upgrade, no matter when you buy it. Maybe M$ have finally started listening to consumers.

So just to make sure can you get the oem upgrade without buying a computer along with it?
